Wild Turkey

My inlaws were driving back from Virginia today and got hit by a turkey in the windshield of their Yukon. The windshield shattered and top of the frame was bent. The inside of the car is full of glass shards (and feathers), but they got lucky and only one of them had small cuts on a arm. They were somewhere between Nashville and Memphis at the time.

They don't have AAA and their insurance doesn't cover a rental car. They do have OnStar which they used to call a tow truck. They have to leave their car there to get it fixed and rent a car to get home. However, since they aren't renting at an airport, they can't take it out of state. So my wife is going to meet them in Memphis tomorrow to pick them up and take them home (3.5 hours each way).

So, as Karl Malden used to say, what would you do? WHAT WOULD YOU DO!!! (I just dated myself)

We have AAA, so I would hope they would be more help than OnStar. Also, I think I'd drive it back without the windshield, even if had to drive 30 mph the whole, to save a trip back to get it.

Oh, by the way, the first guy that stopped picked up the turkey and drove off without checking to see if they were OK!

I don't think you are allowed to drive a car without a windshield.

A wild turkey or a vulture? How did the turkey get up so high? I would have sued the turkey.

You call the nearest mobile glass repair shop and have the windshield replaced and drive the vehicle home.

Surely I'm missing the point? What other option is there?

Why drive home without a windshield when you are going to have to have it replaced at home? How long will a normally 3.5 hour drive take at 30mph?

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Apparently the car frame around the windshield is too damaged for a quick windshield replacement.

First, turkeys can fly (so it did not have to be a vulture). I had no idea they could until one AM I looked out the window and saw 3 turkeys roosting in a tree across from my house, about 35 feet off the ground.

It would not only be illegal, but extremely dangerous to drive a car without a windshield. And I am not really sure what AAA would do for them or what you expected Onstar to do for them.

Why could they not stay in a hotel for an additional day or 2, find something to see, get the car repaired wherever it is - annoying, expensive, but a great story to tell afterwards and they might even see something interesting.

I'm sure their insurance doesn't cover a lot of things but since they were driving a Yukon I suspect they can afford a rental car if they want to.

BS. You don't have to rent at an airport to take a rental out of state. I've done it several times.

I'd have to sip Wild Turkey on the rocks while deciding what to do.

"since they aren't renting at an airport, they can't take it out of state."

I've never heard of this, either.

And if your wife is meeting them in Mamphis, they could have rented a car at the airport in Memphis, anyway.

All AAA would have done would be to tow it to the nearest repair shop.

I can't afford a Yukon, but I do have AAA-type coverage and rental coverage on my insurance. It doesn't seem fair for you to be so inconvenienced because they're too cheap to cover themselves.

Since they'll have to go back to get the car anyway, I agree that they should just stay in the area. And rent a car for local use while they're there. There's plenty to do in Memphis and/or Nashville!

When I returned from a trip to Canada with a small chip in my windshield, I went to find out at home how much it would cost to replace it. What I found out was that ALL insurance in Florida requires full coverage of windshields (they don't like people driving with broken or cracked ones), so it was replaced totally without charge.
Are you telling me there's something better about Florida insurance than other states? I'm surprised.

Massachusetts has automatic complete coverage of windshields (perhaps all glass), too. I think I've seen businesses in other states with advertising that was cost-conscious, though so apparently this coverage isn't in every state.

Anyway, the OP stated that the frame was bent, so this situation is more than just a windshield replacement.

"What would you do?"

Always have AAA for towing and/or coverage on my auto policy.

Have rental car coverage on my auto policy.

Confirm with the rental company that I can take my rental home.

Rent from another rental company if the answer to the above is "no".

Perhaps, hang around the area and sightsee if I have time while my car is being repaired.

Drive home in my (free) rental and drive back to pick up the repaired car when it was ready.

Stop by Piccadilly or similar cafeteria for a celebratory turkey and dressing meal.

Not sure exactly what you were asking when you asked "What would you do"?

Just where were they between Nashville and Memphis.........and, how are they getting on to Memphis for your wife to pick them up?

What would I do? Stay and get my car fixed and then go on home. Surely if they went to a dealership they would get helped promptly. If they are anywhere near Jackson or Henderson, let me know and I will give you a name and phone # of someone who should be able to help you out.

Can't they just get the windshield fixed and the other done when they get home?

And, you know what that guy was gonna do that took the turkey (he probably did not realize the extent of the damage)? Probably tie flies for fishing!

icee, how could you even remember drinking that? That sounds like a black out drunk.

richbutnot, no way you could drive the car home with no windshield. You'd be covered in bug death as would the inside of the car.

Just get it fixed and unfortunately, your inlaws will have learned an expensive lesson.

Always have insurance on your rental.

The car that was in the accident wasn't a rental. The owners' insurance policy did not provide for a free rental car for them to use when their own car was disabled.
