Why do I always miss Aretha Franklin by a week?
When I first visited NYC, back in 1987, both Wilson Pickett and James Brown were playing in town. Three days after I had left.
The same thing happened a couple of months back in Chicago. Aretha was playing the week after I had gone.
I am not rich enough to hop on a plane whenever I see someone legendary is playing the Hollywood Bowl or Village Vanguard.
But I am in LA in mid-Dec, Vegas about the same time, SF in late Dec and late Jan, and NYC in early Jan, and I can't for the life of me find a decent gig guide for any of this places.
Surely there is something better than Van Halen (no disrespect meant), Barry Manilow (no disrespect meant), or Celine Dion (hmmmm) playing in these towns?
Where do I go to (preferably one website per city) find out about Soul, Jazz, Reggae, Hip Hop and Classical concerts?
The usual suspects (The Village Voice, The NY Times et al) seem to list millions of events, down to the Tuesday night bingo games and wet-t shirt contests.
Anyone able to help?
Regards
Bradford

Try www.laweekly.com; it looks like they have a pretty comprehensive listing of concerts and whatnot.
