White Mountains--N.H.

I am planning a summer vacation for my husband, myself and 4 yr. old and 6 yr. old. I'm trying to decide between staying at Nestlebrook Farms in Jackson or at the Grand Summit Resort at Attitash Mtn. Any suggestions? Also, I was wondering if it's worth a drive down to Ruggles Mine?

I may be out of date but I thought that Nestlenook did not want kids at the Inn. Do you mean you want to stay in the various condos that are all part of that resort? If so then I would highly recommend it. Nordic Village etc are really well maintained units and all have very lovely landscaping. The pools are nice.

You are just up the road from Story Land which is a terric little amusment park just perfect for kids yor age. Even the "wild rides" are tame. Also very close to the Mt. Washington Auto Road. A bit further away is Santa's Village - another amusement park geared for young kids. Some like Story Land better others favor Santa. I like Story land myself.

I love the White Mountains. Make sure you take the drive to see the Mt. Washington Hotel. Its really beautiful - a real grand dame of a hotel. There's nothing like sitting on its porch and having a drink.

I haven't stayed at the Grand Summit though I have stayed in Attitash. Both resorts are close to each other but I prefer Jackson.

Never been to Ruggles Mine either but friends have been and ikds in the 7-10 bracket seem to enjoy it the most.

Have a great trip. Happy Holidays.

Ruggles mine is an interestng place, but your kids are probably too young for it. I would concentrate more on Storyland, and perhaps a few short hikes.

I would skip Ruggles Mine. All the good rocks have been gone for a long time. Also it is quite expensive just to get a bag of rocks that you can find in your back yard.

The Nestlenook is not kid friendly. The Lodge at Jackson Village is a very clean, convenient, reasonable place to stay. First floor has sliders out to the backyard and stream. Swimming pool, in-room fridge and coffee makers, etc.
Definitely go to Story Land; in fact, you can go around 4m the first day and the ticket includes the next day's admission. I'd suggest exploring the playground area to the right as you enter the first afternoon. Your ticket would be good for the entire next day, as well, to actually visit the whole park, attractions, rides, shows, etc.
Santa's Village is great. It's usually a little less busy and a little less hot and humid than SL.
There is a cute train themed restaurant called the Glen Junction that's great for kids, and if you don't want to eat at the Mt. Washington itself, try the 50's-themed diner across the street.
If you really want to spend Nestlenook prices, consider staying at the Mount Washington itself!

Kids are not welcome at Nestlenook but can stay at Nordic Village (Across the road) you can get info on nordic village on nestlenook website.
Nordic village is good for kids as it has its own pool, Leisure facilities, Miniture horse petting area, Games room. There is a good choice of acommodation.

Attitash's website allows you to access the summer information now so you can see what will be available to you then.

try www.visitnh.gov for more area information.

My family has vacationed in the area for years. As kids we stayed at Nordic Village. The location is great, the accomodations were really nice, they had a good pool, night time campfires and stories, and were very family friendly. It is very close to Storyland which is great for the kids (tip - head to the left when you go into the park vs. following every one to the right you will get through things faster).
I have never been, but I have friends who own timeshare at the Summit and they love it. It is home of the Alpine Slide and water slide (your kids may be too young), they also have a great kiddie pool at Attitash.
I would skip Ruggles Mine. I was about 10 or 12 the last time I went and found it boring.
Santa's Village (1 hour away) is well worth the trip as is Clark's Trading Post (45 minutes away - cheap admission).
I'd skip the Cog railroad (pricy and the kids were bored after 10 minutes) and do the 1 hour train ride in N. Conway Center instead.
There are plenty of great great hikes for kids 4 & 6. There is a book called something like "Nature Walks in the White Mountains" (it may say for families or kids I'm not sure). It gives you step by step directions, maps, pictures, etc. We have done about 10 of them which included easy walks with great views, waterfalls, walking across streams, picking blueberries, climbing logs and on rocks all easy for kids - some as short as 1/2 mile.

P.S. Find West Side Road and use it to bypass all of the North Conway traffic!!
