Oahu is the best for beginning surfers. Lots of instructors if you want them.
Others just take a board out and watch others and learn that way.
Maui is the best for whale watching, both on wahle watching cruises and from shore.

Many (on Maui)have said they can watch whales from their hotel or condo lanai.
