personally, i would go for less expensive hotels as long as they had a pool. when we go, we are at disneyland all day (and maybe night too), out for dinner and usually a swim or hot tub and then sleeping. i don't see the sense in spending a lot of money on a room.

The voice of reason! Disneyland is so much different than Disney World. Transportation is not an issue as you can walk from just about any hotel/motel on Katella to the front gate of Disneyland. (Not that I would ever pay for an onsite resort in Florida either, but at least for those that do they can justify it by the need for transportation.)
The last time we visited we stayed at the Portofino Inn and Suites. Could see Disney's fireworks from our window. Had a mini-kitchen, great pool and whirlpool, private sleeping area for children and shuttle to/from the park on the days that your feet just couldn't take one more step. All this for around $65 per night.
