Have you vacationed in a "dog-friendly" location (other than camping)We love to travel around to B&B's, Inns, non-chain type accomodations - but we also love our little Corgi. Hate to leave him home - too needy for a kennel. Any suggestions?

Thank you for www.traveldog.com. I have been there looking around. Also if anyone has anywhere they have personally experienced I'd apprecaite knowing how this all works. Expectations of the proprieters, ammenities (people & animals) etc. We live in Tennessee and vacation here and South, Southeast, East & Northeast parts of US.

I bought "Take Your Pet USA." I have a 100lb. golden retriever, which is not as easy to find accomodations for, since many hotels go by the weight & size. However, my husband and I did drive with him from Texas to South Florida and always managed to find a place. (Of course I did have to pretend I was blind and that he was a seeing eye dog once or twice - I'm sorry, but I did!) Some dogs are better behaved than children, and yet hotels can be very fussy. Two places that we have found to be unusually dog friendly are: Saks Fifth Avenue, NY, The Gibson Inn in Appalachicola. But the book has a listing of over 4,000 hotels, motels & B&B's, as well as veterinary clinics and pet etiquette.

We are also owners of two golden retrievers and we are looking for a beachfront location that will take the pups. Can you recommend anything on the Gulf Coast -- Alabama, Florida or perhaps the Georgia coast?

If you want to know people who travel without leaving their pet behind, we can vouch where they are welcome and where they are not. Try: Four Seasons Resorts (pricey but they treat your pouch like a human); Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Mo; some Westins; Inn on the Alameda in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In fact, you'll find most of New Mexico is "dog friendly," including many restaurants. In Santa Fe, we ate at "Geronimo's" and they even brought our dog a bowl of water. By the way, we are crazy enough about our dog that we named our email address after her: Dixi is our 7-year-old Schnauzer. Hope this helps. Unfortunately, most hotels/B&Bs that take dogs or cats are upscale; I once asked a manager the reason for this and he said that most rich people always travel with their pets!
