I don't think I would agree with the statement that NYC has plenty of affordable lodging, though.

I agree with the affordable transportation but not the affordable lodging statement. Staying two subway stops away from Manhattan which costs $ 2,50 a ride is a much better option if you are on a budget.

"Usually affordable"-- it's all relative.
Do we know the OP's budget yet? If they are taking this big trip from the UK, I'd think they have a reasonable lodging budget.
