Where to stay in San Diego after Christmas
Help! We plan to vacation in San Diego Dec 27-Jan 1. Two years ago we stayed in the La Jolla area. This year we thought to change things up a bit and stay in town, possibly in the Gaslamp district where we could walk to restaurants at night. We would be gone during the day-we love to hike and sightsee so we do not need a hotel with daytime amenities. We love fine dining, in particular fresh seafood. Even though we will be staying over New Year's Eve, we are a couple in our early 60's and will have our 2 sons and their wives with us so the bar/party scene does not interest us. Is Gaslamp a good area for us? Has anyone stayed at a nice hotel in that area? We plan to get three rooms and it would be ideal if at least one of them had a sitting area where we could gather or maybe even find a 2 bedroom suite! I am considering the Omni, the Gaslamp Plaza Suites and the Marriott but just want to make sure the places are not too noisy and in a safe area to walk at night.
Thanks for your help.

The gaslamp is pretty much the happening part of San Diego these days. i cannot comment on how quiet it would be, i would think it would depend on what floor you would be in. it also might depend what if any convention is going on during that time as large conventions can take over the gaslamp district. All the hotels you mention are relatively new and should be nice.
There is an Embassy Suites that is a few blocks from the gas lamp that i've had family members stay at and really like. It is closer to the waterfront and possibly could be a little quieter but yet still walking distance to many restaurants etc.

We lived in the apartments next to the Embassy Suites while our home was under construction. The noise from the tracks should not affect you in the Embassy Suites. We could only hear the whistle if our windows were open. And there is another building between the hotel and the tracks. If you were at all worried you could request a water view and that would put you on the other side.
This area is really quiet and residential (as opposed to the Omni, Hilton or Westin which are right in the thick of things) but within a few blocks of all the restaurants.
I would highly recommend. Most people forget about this property so you might get a good deal too.

The Gaslamp is the heart of downtown San Diego with a lot happening. You could stay at the Hotel Solamar (Kimpton boutique hotel) which is a great location. I also recommend The Ivy or the Hardrock. For a quieter location, try The Manchester Hyatt or Marriott on the water. The Gaslamp is safe to walk in at night and all the hotels I mentioned are in easy walking distance. The best seafood restaurant is Oceanaire if you want a formal dining experience. The Fish Market is by far the best local favorite with a fantastic location right on the water and a really reasonably priced menu.
