Will be visiting NYC - looking for a nice hotel at a decent price. Where would recommend we stay? We want to go to Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho, maybe see a show. Any recommendations? Thanks

We have stayed at the Wyndam hotel which has a write up in this web site. It is an older hotel but in an excellent location. The rooms are very large and with a Laura Ashley decor. Rates are quite reasonable for New York. This hotel books up fast!!

Jill, you might try some of the downtown hotels, like the Marriott or the SoHo Grand since most of what you are interested in seeing is near and south of Canal St. The SoHo Grand is very nice and only a couple of years old, so the rooms are very nice. You can walk from there to most of what you are looking to see.

I stayed at the Hudson Hotel a few weeks ago and it was great. I paid $95 for a double room with queen size bed and private bath. The room was very small but beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The whole hotel is gorgeous, especially the lobby with its huge chandelier and ivy walls and ceiling. The bar was unusual to say the least but fun. According to reviews I've read, skip the restaurant, "Cafeteria". Only spent one night there after a dinner in the city, so I did not spend a lot of time in the hotel. But I loved it. It's on 58th Street I believe on the west side. Would definitely stay there again. Have fun

I called the SoHo Grand to check prices - they gave me a quote of $359.
That was a little high.
I tried the Hudson also - but there were no rooms available for the days we need to stay - Jan 17th thru Jan 20th.
I am new to this site and did not see the Wyndham review that was mentioned.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. My husband and I are extending a business trip. We will be staying in MidTown - Sat thru Wed at the Sheraton NY but thought we would stay at another hotel since the company isn't paying for the addtional days.

A few online services were of help to us when we went to NYC for a weekend in September:

We'd actually made reservations through hot-res--not online but by checking the info and then calling the 800 number. Then we discovered travelweb, which has last-minute discounts: last-minute, meaning the same week only. For example, last week they offered rooms at the Waldorf Astoria for $179. They're weekend rates, so I'm not sure if you'll be able to extend the rates through to Tuesday.

We wanted to stay near the theater district, and we found that we were going to have to pay at least $250 or so per night, even at discounted rates. Then Travel Web got us a rate of $180, for the Parker Meridien near Carnegie Hall.

If you do book online, be sure to print out the confirmation and take it with you when you check in. The desk staff often don't know about Internet rates, for some reason.

Jill, you can also search this site for New York and discount hotels. Most of my information came right from here.

Another suggestion is to check hotel chain sites specifically--for instance, you might go to Wyndham's web site (they're a chain, right?) and see if they have any special Internet-only (or other) deals.

Try Radio City Apartments at on 49th St. between 6th and 7th Aves. Just stayed there for a week in late December and found it to be a great value. We had a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchenette and a decent size bathroom for NYC for $212/night, including tax. This room was quiet, clean, well ventilated, another consideration as NYC buildings can often be unbearably warm, and comfortable for 4 adults. Staff was efficient and friendly. Very close to
N and R trains which can take you to the vicinity of many of the places you would want to go. Also, there's a good market called Food Emporeum about 2 blocks west on 49th so you can stock up on bagels and whatever else for snacks and breakfast. Have fun!

I did find something - The Gorham Hotel - They are running a special $169 per night. I used quikbook.com to reserve it and quikbook charged $159.
I hope it is nice. I read a review of it and the person who stayed there liked it. If it is bad place - someone respond and let me know and I will cancel. Thanks again for all the help.

I don't know too much about it but it looks great and the location is ideal. Not too far, well actually walking distance from all the main things to see and do in midtown. Subways are just a few blocks away. The price seems pretty good. Good luck and Welcome to NYC!

Hi Again. Someone recommended the Broadway Inn Bed & Breakfast. Can someone help me decide between that B&B and the Gorham Hotel. I read a review on FODORS that gave the B&B a 5. Just one person's opinion. Coming next week.
