Where to stay in Las Vegas?

I'm planning a trip to Las Vegas in April and I would like any recommendations on where to stay. There will be a total of 2 adults. I would like to avoid the hotels that are geared more toward families and children. I would be willing to spend a little more for a nice room. Any suggestions?
P.S. This will be my first visit to Las Vegas.

For a first impression of Las Vegas it is more convenient to stay center strip and not downtown Freemont St, or either end of strip. Center Strip Casinos geared to adults are The Mirage, Ceasers, The Flamingo and Bally's. The south end has more family oriented Casinos, they are The MGM Grand, NY NY, Excalibur, & Luxor. The north end Casinos geared to family attractions are The Stratosphere, and Circus Circus. I deliberately left out the names of older Casinos that would not show off Las Vegas at it's best. Harrahs which is center stip opposite Mirage, caters to nearby convention bound adults. Center strip Treasure Island attracts lots of children because of the pirate theme. The Monte Carlo opposite MGM seemed to be mostly adults. We have stayed at Bally's once, Flamingo twice, The Miarge three times. All the rooms were comfortable, however, the tropical themed pool, grounds and service at the Mirage was exceptional. Visit www.whats-on.com for current issue of visitors guide. Have a great trip. We were there in December and took 3 teens and stayed at the MGM Grand. They did not like it and did not think it was kid oriented. There is "babysitting" but the place is so huge who knows where that is. I stayed at the Mirage to see George Strait two years ago and liked the atmosphere better than MGM. My husband says for overal ease of parkings and navigating he likes Caesars and the Forum shops there are the best! The top act in Las Vegas is over at the Rio, Eddie Gans (?) and the best buffet in town is the Rio, (but get there early) everyone knows it!! Never stayed there tho!

I have just returned from 2 1/2 weeks in Las Vegas, visit often since our daughter lives there.
My Hotel choices would be The Mirage as No.1..I know that at the moment they are having a special discounted rate on their Petite Suites which are perfectly lovely usually $350 a night are at this time $175, do not know if that will extend into April but their rooms are nice also, and the Hotel is beautiful.
My second chioce would be one of the new Tower rooms at Ceasor's Palace, I do not find their service as good as Mirage, but the Forum is wonderful and the New rooms are very spacious with wonderful huge baths.
I guess my third choice would be Bally's, large rooms although a bit used, excellent service, and a perfect Strip location.

Hi, We go to Las Vegas 3 times a year. We always stay downtown at the Lady Luck. It is just a block off of Fremont Street, very conveniently located. I think since this is your first visit you probably want to stay on the strip so that you can see all of the hotels and casinos. But, please visit downtown and the Freemont Street experience, it's free and quite enjoyable. Alot of people think that downtown is dirty and crime-ridden. this is not true. We have always felt safe. Downtown is less crowded and the table stakes are lower. The best buffet downtown is at Main Street Station. the Golden Nugget also has a very good buffet and some excellent restuarants. If you want to splurge, try Hugo's Cellar in the Four Queens. You will never see children downtown. Stay away from the part of the strip where MGM and Excalibur and Treasure island are. We stayed down at that end one time and couldn't walk on the sidewalk or through some of the casinos because of all the people with children in strollers. Bally's is a great place to stay on the Strip. We also have stayed at the Barbary Coast. Enjoy yourself.

We are headed back to Las Vegas in April. I agree location is very important. Top hotel for the price and oriented towards adults is the Monte Carlo. It is beautiful, new and half the price. We are paying $89 a night, and $158 for Sat night. You can easily take the monorail at the MGM Grand to the other end of the strip and visit the Mirage and Caesars. Be sure and go to the magic show, Lance Burton. Well, worth the $35. You will be surrounded with the New York, New York, MGM and quick trip to Hard Rock and cab to Rio. We are headed their again this year!!

I went to Las Vegas last year with a couple of my girlfriends and I will be returning again later this year. We were quite impressed with the Monte Carlo, although it isn't necessarily in a "premium" location along the strip - it is new and very beautiful. The prices are great compared to Ceasar's or the Mirage (both very nice but pricey). As for eating - we found the dinner buffet at the Luxor quite good (they had a huge selection and the food was good) but stay away from Excaliber at all costs! It was terrible! The food was horrible and it was definetly geared towards families. We really didn't encounter many children in general though.
I plan on booking at Bally's for our next trip because of average prices and good location on the strip. A person does get tired after all that walking! Have fun! (we sure did!)

We have been several times. Stayed at the MIRAGE, TREASURE ISLAND, STARDUST, DESERT INN (before renovations & addition). To stay away from FAMILIES the DESERT INN was best because it catered to "THE MILLIONAIRES CLUB of clientelle. Stardust was GREAT because it seemeed no one knew about it.

There were SOME kids at MIRAGE and Treasure Island but (in AUGUST) not as many as I thought would be there.

It is true, south and north ends of the strip are FAMILY oriented.

The VERY BEST restaurant in VEGAS is the CORTEZ ROOM at the GOLD COAST Casino OFF the strip across from the RIO. They have the BEST STEAKS & PRIME RIB IN NEVADA. They were closed the last time we were there. Can't wait to go back.

Enjoy and let us know how yo liked it when yo return.

Hi, we go to Vegas each year and love it there. Never at a loss for something to do besides gambliing. Usually stay at Bally's because of the location. Diagonally across the street from Caesars, and a short walk up the strip to the Mirage and Treasure Island and a host of other casinos and hotels. Jump on the tram to get to the big corner of MGM, NY NY, Excalibur, Luxor, and Tropicana. Stayed once at the MGM and found it was way way too big. Excalibur is definitely geared to the kiddies. NY NY is way cool, but too crowded. I like Bally's because it had NO gimmick, which was nice after all of the rest of the places. Also, across the street from the Barbary Coast, my favorite casino. Don't forget their $1 margaritas. Have a great time, I'll be back in October.
