If you want to enjoy mid-town and not just the theater, you really should stay there instead of spending time on the subway. The theater district, where your show will be, is full of nice hotels in various price ranges. Part of your experience should include walking around the area and Times Square and having dinner in a restaurant there before the show. We really like The Buckingham, on W. 49th between 8th and 9th and the Flatotel on W. 52nd between 6th and 7th. Try checking prices on Quikbook, my go-to source for the best rates.

If you are going to be there over a weekend, check business hotels in the financial district. We've gotten some very good rates near Wall & Broad on Friday and Saturday nights.
Don't think about how close you are to the theater, think about how close you are to the subway. Brooklyn isn't too far away, if you are near a subway stop.

Good advice, KenF. That's exactly why we opted for the Holiday Inn Manhattan View in Long Island City. Proximiy to the subway is one block.

Have you ever stayed in a hostel? I'm 67, female, love travelling by myself, have stayed in hostels pretty much all over the world. Favorite NY is Big Apple Hostel---right around the corner from Times Square. Push your boundaries. Try it---another adventure!!
