Where to rent a car in Phoenix?

We are traveling to Phoenix in mid-May, heading up to Flagstaff/Sedona for a few days, then returning to Scottsdale for several more days (actually, 1/2 of the we will be treking through the Grand Canyon - to Havasu Falls - during that time). Any recommendation on car rentals with flight to/from Sky Harbour/Phoenix? The on-site taxes seem outlandish (as much as about 60%)! Looking for possible suggestions on getting an offsite rental, and best way to go about it. One issue is our flight home departs about 7am. Thanks for any input!

I know here in Phoenix that Enterprise is a really great company to go with. They are friendly and they'll even pick you up if you need it. I would recommend returning the car the night before you leave and then taking the Super Shuttle to the airport.

I typically use Advantage in the SW & have had no problems. They are also good about providing free upgrades (to convertibles for instance) & they also tend to be cheapest.

By the time you shuttle to and from an off airport site you have eaten up any savings. Look for a car on Hotwire in order to find out all the taxes and add aons. Then bid on Priceline.

We used Dollar at the airport.I would thing trying to save some money by renting downtown would be a real headache. Dollar had the best deal at the time, and they gave us a free upgrade to an SUV. Realize that the rental booths at the airport are willing to wheel and deal.

We rented from Hertz, and they had great service with no problems and hassles. They upgraded us from full-size to premium - we got a dream of a car. There were couple of scuff marks which we pointed out on exit, the man just wrote "scratches all around" on the ticket, and on return the agent never even looked at the car/ scuff marks.

That's me again : I forgot to add that we had planned to return the car day before and catch the Hertz shuttle to airport, and fro there the hotel's shuttle to the hotel. Check with hotel you are staying at. Ours volunteered to have their shuttle pick us up from Hertz direct, just to give them a call. The shuttle picked us up 5-7 min. later.
