Just noticed this thread and you are probably settled with immediate move to SF. Just wanted to add a couple of thoughts--my husband's an MD and my sister is a nurse--if for some reason you get a temp assignment at Children's in Oakland, it's less than a mile from the Rockridge area in north Oakland which is a very nice neighborhood around College Avenue and leads directly to UC Berkeley campus easily, by foot, bus and BART. If/when UCSF contract ends, if you happen to get leads to Stanford in Palo Alto or Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula in Carmel/Monterey (would need a car for Peninsula) they would be worth a look. Best of luck.

darbyvt is taking a road trip from Portland to SF. I think a week was planned for the trip so maybe darayvt is in SF now. Hope a suitable residedance can be found. Rents are so high in SF and having a dog does limit the availability. I think darbyvt will post again as there was a post from her while she was on the Oregon coast enjoying her drive down to SF.

And thank you Perigrinator for your comments. I noticed that it was announced the other day that the SFPD are going to be keeping a better check on Broadway at Columbus late at night due to all the problems that have occured in North Beach. So sad!

Ah...so I made it down, a beautiful drive down Hwy 1 that went too quickly. I'm staying at my family's house in Alamo until my job starts and I find the right place.

As far as housing, I found my dream place (I thought) in Pacific Heights in front of Alta Plaza. Dogs fine, furnished, month to month....PERFECT. Lost it in a coin flip!!! Possibility of another opening in the building in a week or two, we'll see. Found a couple of possibilities, still trying to make a decision on the right one. LOVE the Pac Heights, Marina/Cow Hollow, North Beach areas. I checked out inner sunset, not as great (of course it was my first time in the city and a bit shell shocked) but would be much more convenient to work. My other friends found an amazing place in North Beach with great views...but of course, no dogs!! I'll keep you all posted when I make a final decision. Thanks again for all the tips, I absolutely love San Francisco...think my three months will quickly advance to longer!

Darby VT- were you able to check out Cole Valley?
FYI, I grew up in Danville right next to Alamo.

Hi darbyvt, thanks for posting..I thought you would be in the SF/Bay Area by now. Sounds like you had a good drive down from OR. Best wishes in finding a rental in SF that will work for you and your pup.

Darby - I hope you can find a place in Pacific Heights. We loved living there.

Pam - Monte Vista High School? My sister and her family live in Blackhawk.

Karen, my brother-in-law graduated class of '75, MV. I have a nephew at that school, now and one niece and nephew who already graduated.

That's cool Travel Tess. I don't think I knew many people in class of 75, maybe a few. My mom just sold our family home in Danville last year. It was in the Diablo road/ Green Valley road area. I went to Green Valley Elementary.

Ok first of all...how funny with all the Danville comments!! My family who lives in Alamo lived in Danville for years, kids went to MV for part of their high school years, I've been shown all over Mt. Diablo, Blackhawk, the towns. Lovely place, if I had family and a more long term plan it would be a great place to settle....

NOW!! I finally found my place, just wanted to update you all, thank you soo soo much for all the help and advice. In the end, all four of us got jobs. Two at Kaiser Oakland, I at UCSF, and my other frien in Palo Alto (yikes)! Two found a great apt in North Beach and I found a GREAT place in Pacific Heights right on Alta Plaza. Single level of a Victorian mansion, fully furnished, month to month, dogs welcome, parking. SO, for all who had little faith, I promised something would happen!! Just takes a little time Thank you again! I can't wait to start my life living in the city...already planning to stay longer than three months!

Yahoo! You got a place in Pacific Heights. I tell you, you will love it. Alta Vista Park is a great place for your dog, too. The drive to and from the medical center for my husband was no big deal. He got used to it and if he ended up in commute traffic, it was no big deal...after all your heart will be in San Francisco, right?

Not too difficult to get to UCSF on public transport from Alta Plaza--take 24 Divisadero to Duboce, walk downhill one block and catch the N. Parking on the street during the day around UCSF is not easy, and at night after 6:00 pm. is extremely difficult. I think there is monthly parking at Kezar
