We'll make an RV trip to the New England States this summer. So maybe somebody, who has been there, can give me some hints where the really nice places and interesting sigths are?

Maine in the summer is absolutely beautiful.
Depending on your tolerance of traffic jams, you
may want to avoid the used to be wonderful
drive up scenic route 1 from Portland to
Bar Harbor. I've been going to Maine since
I was little and had not been back for about
five years until last summer and its gotten crowded. You definitely want to go up to Bar
Harbor and Acadia National Park. There are
alot of RV grounds outside the town. At the
park you 'll want to go swimming and rent canoes
at Eagle Lake, go to the star talk on Cadillac
Mtn. , eat lunch at the Jordan Pond House
(it gets crowded so expect to wait if you want
to eat inside). Eat dinner at Freddy's in Bar Harbor
if you have kids they'll love it.

Get yourself some tour guides. "Maine, An Explorer's Guide" is awesome. Call the COC's. Incredibly comprehensive literature covering everything imaginable. Or, you could just "wing it" and still have a fabulous experience, asking the advice of locals and picking up information at the numerous "tourist information" booths along the way. As to "really nice places" and "interesting sights", do a little research. Obviously, you have access to the WORLD WIDE WEB. Do a search! If you wish to be told where to go, where to stay and what to do, pay a travel agent. It is positively unimagable that any self-respecting seasoned traveller would provide you with "insider" tips and information (well earned with a considerable investment in time, money and effort), so that you could take advantange of same. The information you request is readily availble on this website.

May I suggest the Lakes region in New Hampshire. There are numerous little towns that are built around Lake Winnepesauke (sp?) and it's just so terrific to visit all of them. I live in Massachusetts and try to get to NH at least a couple of times a year.

Also, Kittery, Maine has some wonderful shopping outlet stores and it's a very pretty area near water but on the southern coast (right on the NH/Mass. border.

Rockport/Gloucester is another pretty area...sailors etc.

If you've not been to Plymouth, MA, I really want to suggest that area. It's rich in history...(Plymouth Plantation) and I know they have lot's of camping around there...DO NOT stay in Myles Standish State Park...can be dangerous.

Favorite places in Maine:
1. Pemaquid Point and Lighthouse. On a clear day you can see Monhegan Island, but it is usually foggy. Very atmospheric. Huge waves crashing on the rocks. There's a very nice luch room there. I recommend the fried fish sandwich or the lobster roll.

2. Cliff Island. You'll have to park the RV and take a ferry, but it's a great way to see Casco Bay. When you get to Cliff island, you will feel like you have stepped back in time. Ask directions to the beach at the one store on the island, then walk there. Talk about getting away from it all!

You should visit the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Drive on the Kancamangus Highway and through Franconia Notch. The views are great. When going through Franconia Notch, stop at the Flume for a short hike where you will need to climb a lot of stairs. It's worth the effort. I would also go to the top of Mt. Washington while you're in the area. Have fun.
