I want to check back in with a brief trip report. My husband and I agree that Colorado is the most beautiful and overall scenic place we've ever been. We made a 3 and a half week circle going counter clockwise starting in Denver on Sept 20. The leaves were perfect, progressing as we went around the state. It was all so much better than we could have expected.
What we consider the must sees: Rocky Mtn Natl Park, Maroon Bells, Colorado Natl Monument, Black Canyon of the Gunnison Natl Park, Ouray jeep tour, Sand Dunes Natl Park, and Garden of the Gods. All but the first were total surprises--I had never heard of them until I researched this trip. Wow!

I notice that Estes Park is next to Grand Lake. You are traveling late September - Early October. Are you planning on driving Trail Ridge Road in between? The average date for permanent winter closure is around the second week of October but there will be ocasional closures in the weeks before. Chances are that the road will still be open but at that time of year there is a possibility that they will close the road on the day you are attempting to transit. You would need to go south toward I-70 and get to Grand Lake from the South. Just a caution.
