Could you be referring to Treasure Island in Vegas? It's on the strip right next to the Mirage.
But if you're actually looking for a tropical destination to take the kids that's not in the middle of the desert and surrounded by hookers, I recommend the Atlantis on Paridise Island, Bahamas. It is a tad commercial and certainly expensive, but it is one of the most magnificent properties found anywhere and has limitless activities for both adults and kids.

Treasure Island is on the West coast of Florida, just below Clearwater and just to the north of St. Petersburg Beach. It is a barrier island with spectacular white sand beach (they hold a huge sand castle building deal there every year). I spent many summers there as a kid when we packed up the old station wagon and headed to Florida for a couple of hot and humid weeks in Florida every August (my parents had a strange sense of humor about vacations.)
It is a family sort of place, not many luxurious resorts, (none in fact), but average to nice motels and now an increasing number of condos. I'm not a fan of Marco Island, but I would think you'd be better off there than at Treasure Island if you are into the "resort" idea. On the other hand, there is a lot more activity--Busch Gardens for one thing--in the Treasure Island/Tampa area than there is in Marco.

Nelson Island (?) in the British Virgin Islands is the one RLS reputedly wrote about. I don't think it's inhabited but can take day sails out of Tortola. If anything like our USVI it would be well worth the trip. My 12yr old loved our trip to ST JOHN and St Thomas.
