This thread has taken many different turns. Too funny.

We take our own pillows to "cheap" hotels because our experience is that cheap hotels have cheap hard pillow. We like down and feather. We also take our own wine, and sometimes our own glasses, since many hotels only give you two or four. Sometimes I even take my own nightlight. Scandalous, I know. We drive to this town, so there is plenty of room to pack things to make our room and sleep more comfortable. There have even been times that I have bought flowers to put in our hotel room if we are staying a few days. It makes the room smell fresh. Also, I prefer to stay in hotels where the windows open.

Yes, loud pillow cases. Forgot about that one. We threw the pillows in at the last minute. Actually we don't often stay in "cheap" hotels, but my DH made the reservations. That could be a whole new thread.

For those of you with such a wackey sense of humor, you have really made this thread fun and interesting. To the rest of you, lighten up.

Yes, why would you want to not leave the pillow in the car overnight? Just wondering...

Heavens, after many years of flying to our destinations, we finally took a road trip this past summer, and I have to confess we brought an amazing amount of stuff. We brought a case of wine for entertaining at a conference we were attending, a cooler full of food for the road, a pillow for car naps, etc etc etc. Every time we had a decision to make, we just thought, "throw it in the car!" It was fun to be so indulgent after years of packing light and agonizing over an extra pair of shoes.

OK, the somewhat believable and relevant answer is that I don't want to leave a pillow in the car because it might draw a thief's attention, not so much to the pillow as to the possibility that we've something else in there, perhaps something under the pillow.

The more truthful answer is that a pillow that stays in a car overnight smells like the car. I don't know about your car after a long trip, but ours....... ;-)

soccr, your explination makes sense to me, a good thought in fact.
And Marilyn, when my DH and I use to drive up to Canada you cannot imagine the stuff that got "stuffed" in the car. The bar carrycase, we did stop and buy the wine in Oregon however. The snack food. The pillow the blanket, the clothes for sailing, the clothes for going out to dressy restaurants with friends in Vancouver. The casual clothes. The coats "just in case". Etc. etc.

And than the shopping along the way, back and forth! It was a wonder that we even had room in the car for us by the last few days.

And Heavens, if it makes you feel any better I did a real "goof up" once in Italy. We were in a small town near Milpensa airport in Italy for a few days after a long trip. A friend lived there so we wanted to spend the last days with he and his wife.

I cleverly decided we should unpack (after a 2 month drive around Italy) so that I could organize everything for our flight home.

The last night I got some kind of food poisoning. Only time that has happened on a trip. I was sooooo sick all night.
Our flight was about noon the next day.
I was so draggy from being sick. My DH and I started just throwing things in the luggage the morning of the flight.

I got home to discover that the drawer I had put my excess jewerly, wonderful belts and beautiful scarves etc. had NOT been packed. That included a beautiful bracelet my DH had bought me while we were on Capri.

And when we called the hotel "no, they knew nothing about anything". Have never been to that town again. Only bad feelings I have about a town in Italy. Food poisoning, and losing all
my extra jewerly and accessories. And the hotel room overlooked the garbage area and we were woke up every morning with clanging and banging of garbage trucks.

Oh well, no matter what, like a lot of you I now check and double check the room before checking out. Lesson learned.

We have frineds who have tried to squish pillows in those "space bag" things and then pack them in suitcases - they say pillows return to original shape and size.
