Definitely leave before 7. The later you leave , the heavier the traffic.
If the 10 is packed, you can take the 405 South, to the 105 east, which has a carpool lane!
Then you can take the 605 south to the 91 east to the 5 south.
Sounds complicated, but not really.
Are you sure that Disneyland opens at 8?
Have fun!

Personally, I would spend the night down by Disneyland if I wanted to be there when it opens in the a.m. If you have reasons for staying in Santa Monica the night before I do understand but it will be a tough ride. Have fun!!

6:30 to play safe. Keep your options open by listening to KNX 1070 AM for traffic reports every six minutes.
I would take 405 South to 91 East to 5 south, more carpool lanes.
Being on Main Street when they drop the rope is a great way to beat the crowds and walk on to lots of rides. Things start to get crowded about 10:30.

Thank you, Logandog. I will try your route. We have had pretty good luck just going down the 5- not too many people out driving around that early on a Sunday.
Yes- we bought annual passes. It is so much fun. We are really enjoying it.

A nice place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon is the bar at Avalon Cove, in DCA. It usually does not open til 2 or 3pm. You have to walk through the Ariel's Grotto restaurant to reach it (ask the hostess for directions). Very pleasant especially at sunset when the lights come on, and the calamari appetizer isn't bad. Margaritas are quite strong (don't ask how I know this).
Another nice place to eat on the weekend is the UPSTAIRS Vineyard Room patio. You should make a reservation via Disney Dining. It's right on the parade route. The dinners are fixed price 3 or 4 course, not inexpensive, but actually quite good. And a nice selection of California only wines, either by the glass, bottle or as a tasting flight.

Thank you for the tips! We will try them out. It is so fun to find out about the special or lttle known things to do in Disneyland/ DCA. That would be a good topic for this board.
Thanks Again!

I could probably write a book on the lesser known delights of Disneyland.
I assume you've been to see Billy Hill and the Hillbillies at the Golden Horseshoe theatre in Disneyland? Absolutely hilarious.

mlgb! We just went for our first time last Sunday! It was crazy-good!! We had so much fun and laughed and laughed. We talk about Billy every day and can't wait to go back.
What are some of your other favorites?
We just took the Walk in Walt's Footstep's Tour It was very interesting. Our tour guide was great!
We have really been enjoying Fantasyland. It is my favorite land. I want to go as often as we can while my daughter still loves it.

In DCA, I like the Sorcerer's Workshop in the Animation building on Hollywood Blvd. Answer a quiz and you will find out which Disney character you are. The karaoke-type booths where you can sing or be the voice of Iago are fun, also. And I like to sit in the lobby of the building and watch all the Disney film clips. All of the shows inside are good, too. Great for a hot, crowded day.

I drive the LA fwys a lot. I think 6:00am would be a better bet. If you are on the road later, it is already mired in traffic jams. When I go downtown LA, I find if I leave around 6:10, the traffic jams are less difficult than if I leave 20 minutes later. And I still sit in heavy traffic with stop and go traffic. You will be in one of the most heavily trafficed areas in the country. If you can bear getting up for a 6:30am ride, I would set the alarm another half hour earlier and leave at 6:00am. Best wishes for a fun day.
