I live at Isle of Palms, SC (a barrier island 20 mins. from downtown Charleston, SC)- so, naturally I'm prejudiced towards a trip this way.
Have to agree with others that a great trip for the east coast would be to get to NY and tour, head down the coast (skip Atlantic City!), visit Washington DC; perhaps Williamsburg, VA; outerbanks of No. Carolina (maybe); definitely Charleston, SC; and if possible, Savannah, GA.
History, warm amiable people (in most places), good restaurants, and a lot to see.
Hope you enjoy your trip.

Thank you all for the great suggestions.
We did like the westerns states last time we were there and we have looked at returning to that area but this time visit Zion Park and Bryce Canyon instead. What would the weather be like there in early November?
