What's Your Poison? - 07/28/06

It's late here and after an extra long day I'm just about ready for bed, but figured I would see what my Fodorite friends are up to in the poison and traveling department on this Friday night.

If you are doing as I am, you are sitting outside (well, maybe not if you are in the sweltering heat) and thinking up new destinations. So, what's your poison and where are you dreaming of traveling to right now? If you could be anywhere other than where you are, where would that be?

I just returned from a 'girls night out' or we call 'girls gone wild' night just for fun. 2 spouses out of town and the other with BF troubles. Was suposed to take some Salsa lessons or go out to eat and a movie. Ended up just enjoying Rosemont Chardonnay with a chicken salad and some fruit and getting to know each other alittle better ( we're co-workers ). A good visit!

Greetings, Statia!

Tonight's poison was a 2002 Santa Alicia Napa Valley Merlot.

Although we have several trips scheduled between now and December I find myself dreaming, 24/7, about our trip to Rome and Naples Italy this December. And I dream constantly about every travel contest I can find to enter but I never win so those dreams tend not to last as long!

I hope you enjoy a lovely weekend!

My poison? Rain vodka (made from 100% organic white corn).

My dream - take me away. At this point, just Calgon sounds nice. But I'm with Ann Marie - winning a contest sure would be OK with me! I'm beginning to think about a Pacific Northwest trip for next year, but based on past trips, I dream of Paris . . .

Hi Statia,
Poison- a lite beer. (a few of them
I am tired too. I had a long day of driving down the east coast from in laws in NJ home to VA. I took the kids alone and so I was the solo driver..uggh. The traffic is so tiring.
Anyway, the mother in law fattened me up some more (not that I needed any) so I am now even more in need of the diet! Good night!

Greetings -

Today was all about kids as most Summer days are for me. The kids are finally in their beds, sheets tangled or kicked off under the steady breeze of their fans. The dishes are done and now some down time for me with C-Span humming in the background.

I'm dreaming of Switzerland. Two days ago, I checked airfares. Yesterday, I was on the Zermatt forum. Today, I was checking hotels. What will it cost? My husband smiled at the idea of it. I'm still in the daydream phase, but I just may make it happen, but not until next summer.

Have a great weekend!

At this moment, there is nowhere I would rather be than here---western Washington, light breeze, cool evening, and an after-dinner swim in the lake with the dog. Pre-swim libation was your average Pinto Grigio.

But as always, I dream of Switzerland. Next year, late June-early July. The airfares are scary at this point, but hopefully they will come down. Claire_Bluesky. please let me know if you find anyting good in airfares.

Hi Statia~ breezy in Alaska, Chardonnay.
I am planning a trip to Shanghai for next spring. My sister-in-law, who has lived there, keeps telling me about bizarre snacks like cockroaches on a stick, although I would say that if a critter has a chocolate coating, I am game!
In ten days, I am hopping across our pond to Hawaii and meeting two fun Fodorites, matnikstym and BayouGal.
Have you been affected by the hurricane season where you are? J.

Hi dear Statia, breezy in the Sacramento Valley too. After something like 12 or so days of 113 degrees the weather has dropped down to mid 90's during the day today and right now it is 68 degrees! We all feel like we are in paradise.

Had some chardonnay on my deck with a friend while munching on pepper potato chips. Had a a bit of limoncello on the front porch after dinner while visiting with another friend.

The cool breeze and the cool temparture is so wonderful, exactly what we have all needed.

Wishing you two a beautiful weekend!!!

Here in minnesota my poison is chianti classico- one glass too many I might add. My wife and boy are away. I am dreaming about being waist deep in a river in montana throwing a fly or hiking a trail along the coast in italy looking out into the sea with my lovely wife. I think I'll have another glass.

Poison--Jack Daniels and ginger ale. A friend and I went to a movie tonight. Lumumba is the story of the first democratically-elected prime minister of the Congo (Patrice Lumumba), his brief time in power, and his unbelievably brutal takedown at the hands of Mobutu Sese Seko, who became dictator for some 36 years. What. a. downer!

Mobutu Sese Seko was all over CNN International in May 1997, and I mean ALL over it. I know this because, on our wedding trip in Italy, my husband had TV news on in our various hotel rooms when we weren't out sightseeing. I heard the saga of the run-up to Mobutu's overthrow by Laurent Kabila at least 786 times in three weeks.

This is all an extremely long circular trail leading back to the topic of our travel plans. For our 10th anniversary, we're thinking about another trip to Italy (our 4th, overall)--Rome, Pompeii, maybe Naples. Then today, at our local museum, I see that the European art society there (which I've joined), is planning a May 2007 trip to Naples, Pompeii, and the AC! How perfect--we could have a week in Rome, and then join up with them!

Now, yes, this is tour group travel, but it's tour group travel for rich people, with some private tours of museums and archaeological sites (we would be the not-rich ones among them). The itinerary as it's laid out sounds very exciting! But it's by no means certain right now, and so is still a travel dream.

Happy travels, everyone!

Last night it was a cold Corona Light. I am always dreaming of Bermuda but Enzian's description of her world sounded pretty nice. Cheers!

The juice of 3 limes, equal parts to that of expensive tequila and Grand Marnier (rough day) vigorously mixed with ice in a cocktail shaker, comsumed in front of the rotating fan. (I don't need no stinkin' air conditioning!)

oh, yeah, and I'm thinking about how good the above blend would taste on a breezy lanai overlooking (any tropical) blue water...

No liquor last night. Today, coffee.

As long as it's hot as hell nearly everywhere right now, how about thinking about going to Alaska?

It would be this time next year.

Aug. 1-7, 2007 Vancouver departure. GTG and good group rate. Not one of the huge ships, about 1/3rd of that size- inside passage voyage Wed. to Wed. Holland America.
