What's the name of this parade on January 1?

Sorry, I forgot. No, it's not the Rose parade in Pasadena (Los Angeles). It's on the East Coast, in Pennsylvannia, and it's not exactly a parade, more like marching bands perform one by one in the same spot.

Anybody knows?

Yes, yes, yes, thank you so much! I even found an old thread:

Now I can search the tv guide on-line to see if they show it here. One year I watched, and loved it.

Thank you, Don!

On my first New Year's Day, living in the Philly area, I planned to go to the Mummers Parade. When I woke up at 8:30 in the morning, I figured I would have missed most of it by the time I got to Center City, so I decided to watch it on TV. The telecast didn't end till 7 pm that evening. This is several parades in one day (comics, wenches, string band, etc); with MAJOR competitions for the best group. I've been to Thanksgiving parades in Detroit, Philly, New York, and Chicago; as well as the Fiesta and Rose parades -- Mummers beats them all.

hi faina, i just love a good parade and the MUMMERS PARADE is my all time favorite. the music with all those banjoes, the astoundingly intricate and beautiful costumes...i watched a show about the mummers clubs once and they work on the theme and making the outfits pretty much starting jan 2. whole families participate and pass this tradition along through the generations. very cool.
living in maine now - does anybody know if any NE tv stations will carry it??? one of these years i will just make a plan and go!

When I saw my first Mummers parade many years ago, it was a sensational spectacle, the culmination of a year of intense preparation and inventivenes of dedicated people. Since then, the breath-taking display of people, costumes, music, ingenuity, and humor has increased exponentially.

You can see it on TV, but there is nothing like seeing it in person, standing on the street, feeling the excitement generated by thousands of dedicated fans, young and old, cheering on the strutters.

Put it on your list of things to see.

Hi Faina, the Mummers plan to march on Saturday so maybe you can still see it. All the feathers and silk in the costumes gets ruined in the rain so they always cancel if it looks like there wil be a steady rain.

I heard the other day that the US once sent the Polish-American String Band (one of about 20 string bands that march in the parade) to a ceremonial occasion at the Vatican where they performed for Pope John Paul. They said he did a little dance!

Several years ago, we accompanied some friends to a New Years Eve party in Philly, their home town.

Imagine our surprise when they started playing the "Mummer's Strut" & almost everyone in the place got up & "strutted"! It was hilarious.

I was born and raised in Philly and still don't get the Mummers. Nonetheless, it was rained out and will be conducted on Saturday January 6th.

I am a master at the Mummers Strut, always performed to "Oh Those Golden Slippers." If only I had thought to download it for my NYE's party!

You know I wrote that first, buongiorno, but then I doubted myself and went for the more PC version.

Philadelphians do call the city Philly in my experience. Not all of the time, but often enough.
