I don't think the Soup Nazi store from Seinfeld is currently open. There was a sign on the door all winter that said it was closed because the soup nazi was working on a plan to franchise the store.

I can't remember the official name of the store and i haven't been in midtown in a long time so i don't know the current status.

i like to buy not necessariy new york things in new york, but foreign things that you can only find in new york like ginger candy or stuff that's not typically american.

And if you are into clothes, but don't want the clothes that come from a department store, try the small shops in the village like Purdy Girl or other shops in SoHo. and of course you can always go to Century 21 and get something fabulous at a discount. That's what i think of as New York, getting something designer at discount prices.

A New York state of mind?

I didn't find one in New York because it was too expensive.

If you're getting a cheesecake, make it from Junior's in Brooklyn. Best bagels, pizza and best New Yorkers are also from Brooklyn. Posters and reproductions from the museums (especially the Brooklyn Museum). Theater district stores sell t-shirts, etc. from shows.

Pickles from Russ and Daughters.
The guy who mentioned cheesecake here brought back a wonderful memory of the Black Out year before last, when I walked to my brother's house in Soho-the streets were teeming with people in disaster mode, and all electricity (ie refrigeration) was gone. I passed my favorite cheesecake shop on Lafayette near Kenmare (even better than Junior's) and the owner was out front trying to give them all away before they melted!)

I always visit my favorite store in Midtown East, called Extraordinary. I think they have a store in Brooklyn, too (?). They sell cool handmade objects. Though the artisans are not necessarily from NYC, everything I have ever purchased from this store has been something I have never seen anywhere else and couldn't ever find in my own hometown.

I love Fishs Eddy. I'm a dish freak though. I love finding something unusual to bring home and use through the years.

bamakelly, where is "Extraordinary"? It sounds like a store we would enjoy.

When my husband and I got married this past May in NJ, we bought our wedding party "Only in New York"-themed gifts. Here are some stores we used:

Kate's Paperie- I love this store, which has several locations all over NYC. Obviously it's known for paper, but it has a huge variety. From here we bought notecards, a business card holder, a wax seal kit, a leather-bound golf rule book, and even a cute tea set.

Fishs Eddy- such a neat dish shop. I bought a set of cute drinking glasses here.

Dylan's Candy Bar- of course, candy! (for our flower girl)

The Chocolate Bar- the name speaks for itself

Pearl River Mart- I bought Chinese slippers here for a bridesmaid, and also a journal. They have a ton of great eclectic items.

Zabars- we bought a "NYC essentials" gift basket for my in-laws here.

Enjoy!

Do New Yorkers actually eat those "dirty water dogs" or are they more of a tourist trap kinda food? Anyone else have a special memory of an item bought in NYC??

Margie, Extraordinary is at 251 E 57th St. It is a VERY small store but everything in it is, well, extraordinary! Their prices are very reasonable considering it is all original work by artisans from all over the world. I hear their Brooklyn store is good too, but I am not sure where it is located. 212-223-9151 is the phone number on the business card I have; maybe they could tell you the number of the Brooklyn store too.

Among my "NY-only" purchases there have been exquisite bookmarks and jeweled cases for gifts for friends and a wooden teabox for my mother-in-law. They have gorgeous serving trays, boxes and decorative items.

starrsville,
I had a set of bowls from Fishs Eddy that I loved. I used to buy glasses and cups there, it is such a fun store!
