What's so great about Santa Fe?

I have never set foot into the state of New Mexico but the fact that Santa Fe always seems to make the top cities lists, get's my curiosity up. Just what is it about Santa Fe that is so wonderful? Is it a good place to live or just to visit? Thanks, Candee

I have only been to Santa Fe once and loved it. I think the climate is great. I liked all the galleries, museums and little shops. I loved the mountains (I am from Chicago where it is flat!). Also, they have some great restaurants - especially southwestern restaurants. We also went to Taos and the drive is great. We visited a Pueblo while there. I would highly recommend it.

Great restaurants of all varieties, not just Southwestern, at many price points, almost all casual dress; unique, authentic shopping opportunities; lovely climate; stunning natural setting; charming architecture; fascinating Native American pueblos; at least a half-dozen really superior museums, not to mention all the remarkable galleries...need more? I just returned from my first visit a few months ago, and can't wait to go back, probably for the holidays.

The high desert terrain. Though, not as spectacular as some of the spots in Utah, it is breathtaking to see the mesas and buttes. They have the bluest of skies there. The pale green of sage and pinon pines dotting the red cliffs. The air is pure (OK, maybe not IN Santa Fe.) And the weather is usually a welcome relief from where I'm from.

And, as said, they have great restaurants there (Pauls, SantaCafe, etc). Wonderful art galleries. Super hotels (Inn of the Anasazi, Bishop's Lodge).

Okay, it can get a little touristy (chili this, cactus that), which can be off-putting. But put that stuff out of your mind and let the enviroment sweep over you.

If I could, I'd live there. Until then, I'll keep visiting.

Thanks guys...I hope there are Italian or Continental restaurants there. Unfortunately for me, my husband can't stand Mexican or Southwestern type food!

Yes, Candee, there are ALL kinds of restaurants in Santa Fe besides just southwestern. In fact, you can find pretty much any kind of food you want there - and the majority of it's really good. That's just one of the charms of Santa Fe. The other things I like about it are:
- scenery - all terrains available, love the mountains
- Culture - sometimes feels like a foreign country
- arts - can't get enough
- weather - 300 days of sunshine
- people - fascinating people watching, open minded people
- architecture - adobe buildings make the city different than anywhere else.
- photographic opportunities - The light in the morning and afternoons is absolutely wonderful.

Ok, there's so much more but I'll stop there. I've been there 5 times in the last 6 years and will be moving there in 6 months. I can't wait.
