John Edwards - Very Handsome Senator from NC
Julia Roberts - GA
Al Gore - TN
John Grisham - MS
Ann Rice - LA

There is no "typical" southern person, just like there is no typical New Yorker or typical West Coaster.

I guess we can argue over the word typical from now until doomsday.
Given the positive qualities of family values, resourcefulness, being a good parent, a high level of intelligence, and working to improve people's lifes,
my favorite southern personality is the wife of Jimmy Carter: Rosalyn Carter.

Most of her work in the post White House years has been directed toward humanitarian efforts. For example, she and Mrs. Bumpers, wife of the former govenor of Arkansas, formed an organization called ECBT which endeavors to help children get immunizations. And her work to improve the status of people who have mental problems is virtually legendary.
And she is very instrumental in the functioning of the Carter Center in Atlanta.

The (fictional) person for me who personifies the south is Forrest Gump. Also Lorretta Lynn or Wilie Nelson.

The true southerner is represented best by the following TV characters:

Jed Clampett
Jethro Bodine
Mr. Haney
Eb and Flo
The owner of Arnold the Pig (forget his name)
Gomer Pyle
Goober

and, in real life, Ted Turner.

Andy Griffith.

Note to Dawn, here in North Carolina, we really don't consider John Edwards as a southerner, since he spends all of his time in Iowa and New Hampshire.

I'd have to say Hank Hill of Fox's "King of the Hill."

He loves football, propane, his family and the USA.

Hank Hill is pure Texan, not necessarily pure Southern, but to a large extent I agree.

My top choice would also be Andy Griffith. He is religious, down-to- earth, prefers the simple life, friendly, and smarter than you might think. Yes, there is a bit of "Deliverance" in the South, but it is a lot rarer than it used to be.

Another good choice would be Charles Kuralt.

I can't agree with all of Roger's choices, but some are quite intriguing. Shelby Foote and Robert E. Lee are perhaps perfect examples of "typical" educated Southerners.

its gotta be some guy who can't read, who owns a pickup truck with a confederate flag on it, who still believes in segregation and considers "grits" to be gourmet food.

The majority of southern men are represented by Truman Capote.
