People don't really dress up all that much any more. Nothing like in the past anyway.
I recently went to see the Producers on a Saturday evening and there were men in jeans, women in casual pants, and of course a few people who were dressed up to make the evening special, but they were definitely the exception.
Wear what will make you happy and comfortable for the occasion.

Jean...
Jill is right. We went to the Producers on Friday night and when we checked into the hotel I found that I had packed my husbands suit jacket but apparently his pants were on a separate hanger. We raced down to Bloomingdales and paid a hefty price for a pair of black pants to go with his jacket only to find out that when we got to the theatre most people were in jeans! We were by far the most dressed up people there. What an eye opener!

Jean - friends from work just came back from New York and we are planning our first trip to New York later this year. They went to a couple of Broadway shows and found the same thing as Jill did. They dressed in business attire. Her husband wore a sportsjacket and dress pants and she wore a cocktail dress. That's what we were planning on doing.

I dress up a little for Broadway shows, and I wish more people would. I am always comfortable, but a little dressy. My rule of thumb is to wear whatever you would were to a nice dinner at a nice restaurant.
FYI - Saturday nights are usually the dressiest. Matinees are more casual.

Here is a tip that was given to me when I moved to NY...I was getting ready to go out on a Sat night and I was getting all dolled up-my friend said that only out- of- towners dress up to go out in NYC on a Sat night...then when we walked around that night, the "out of towners" were pointed out to me- I remember this and still watch the people around me to see if this is still so-and it usually is...the Opera,a concert at Lincoln Centers Avery FIsher Hall, or the Ballet warrant dressing up more and of course so do good restaurants..but New Yorkers do not really get all done up for a play or casual occassions such as that..
