My comment may have seemed flippant, but it wasn't.
You had already received the only logical answer:

Check weather.com the day before you leave ... but be prepared for just about anything ... 50's to 90's.
Enjoy San Francisco!"
To which I would add, bring layers.
My remark was inspired by my visit to San Francisco in early September, 2005, when it was so cold and windy that we cut two days off our planned four-day visit and went to where it was 20 degrees warmer--which was every place 15 to 20 miles away.
Your hotel will have umbrellas to loan.

Hi Monica_S, layers definetly. And keep in mind that SF has microclimates. I usually find it sunnier and warmer say in North Beach versus in the Richmond District (which you will probably not be in) that can be so foggy. Market St. can get cold and windy, especially when the sun starts to go down. Saying that generally SF has nice weather in September. And yes, do wear comfortable shoes! BTW, I posted on your restaurant thread.

Forget the shorts unless you plan to travel across the bay to a warmer inland area. Normally SF has "Indian Summer" in September - it can get hot! But this year, we have not had our normal warm weather in the entire region. The LAYERS advice is best. Bring long pants, short sleeved top, long-sleeved top, sweater, and jacket. Good walking shoes are essential, depending upon your plans. It's a great walking city - enjoy the hills and the amazing views. It can be breezy or very windy so think of your clothing as windbreakers this time of year. high 50's at night, maybe high 60's day - up to low 70's at most. If you are dressed for the weather, you will enjoy yourself immensely.

You asking for weather "this time of the month" and trip is 3 weeks later. No easy for locals to say more on search Fodors and everyperson asking same question five years now and again. YOu not fimd answer for better. Dressing layers every day is our rule.

Layers. Monica, people aren't kidding with you.
San Francisco has the changing-est weather of any place I have EVER been. Turn a corner and you'll suddenly need to put a sweater on... or take it off.
I'd pack pants, good walking shoes, and various tops that can be layered. I was caught in a DOWNpour (friggin monsoon) one trip but just ducked into a drug store and bought an umbrella. If you need something just go to Fisherman's Wharf where they have racks of fleece to sell to underdressed tourists (again, no joke).

Today is a sunny day. I walked out of the building at lunch, and immediately put my sweater on. The weather is always unpredictable.
And leaving your rented house, remember that the South city is warmer then San Francisco (these are 2 different cities with Daly City and Brisbane in between... maybe more)
