What to do in Bourbon Street

Most people just visit Bourbon St. to go to bars. The street is one long strip of bars, exotic dancers and shops with adult toys. There are a few restaurants also, but non that I know to recommend.
They also have street peddlers, homeless people on Bourbon. In other words its not a place to bring your kids.
One street over is Royal. It has exclusive shops and art stores.
There are several great restaurants all over. Walk around and enjoy. Just be careful at night, don't walk on deserted streets.

Bourbon Street consists mainly of nightclubs between Canal Street and the 800 block, where it switches to primarily residential for the remaining six blocks. The nightclub zone has strip shows, jazz clubs, some restaurants and quite a few t-shirt shops. It's also where people walk up/down the street with open containers of alcohol so it's kind of like a state fair for adults! It's certainly not for everyone but you should walk down the street at least one night. (And no, there are no homeless on Bourbon!) Interesting characters, perhaps!

I will be staying at the Bourbon Orleans hotel in late May. I am bringing my 11 year old daughter. I have looked at guide books and they talk about all kinds of site seeing to do in the French Quarter, which, of course includes bourbon street. I had all sorts of plans to get up early in the AM and walk around and get some latte and sight see. Is this a fantasy? Should I stay some where else with this young of a daughter?

I agree with John. Also even if you walk out on Bourbon you can easily turn off to get where you are going. Just don't walk up and down the street with your daughter looking in windows or open doorways.
Also, skip the latte and get beignets and cafe au lait.
