Hi,
You could look at http://www.sunrisesunset.com/ for the dawn time.
As regards driving time I'd guess an hour at minimum, even 90min, it's twisty at the top and there will be traffic heading that way - I'm asleep at that time of day. I've been told that sunset can be equally spectacular but without all the hordes in vans, on bikes etc.
Have a great trip,
Paul

Thanks for the replys
We went to Maui last year and didn't make it up there. On our first day there we were up at like 3 in the morning Hawaii time (5am) our home time. So we figured if the same thing happens we can head up the mountain to see the sunrise since we won't be able to see it from where we are staying. Thanks again. I hope we make it

You could take a tour. They serve hot chocolate & coffee, once you are at the top, you can explore on your own and find a spot to view the sunrise from. I think we were picked up at the hotel around 3am or so, from Wailea. I would definatley go the first morning you are there because of the time change. It was very cold, about 40 degrees before the sun was actually shining. Have a great vacation!
