What Priceline area to stay in San Francisco?

Hello.....I plan to bid on a 4Star hotel in San Francisco late July-early August. What area do you like best.......Union Square East, Union Square West, SOMA, or Embar ? THANKS!

Thanks for your reply. I plan on the ususual tourist spots during the day and some hip clubs at night. So, I guess I should stay in the area with the most nightlife. Thanks again.

Not Union Square West -- all the others are fine. Union Square West goes too far west - into some not-so-great areas.

Agree with the lovely sf...
We love UnSq East and Embarc. 3 1/2* (The old "Boutique" designation, I believe) and above.
Usually easy in/out for us since we drive down.

Fish Wharf prob 2nd fave. Close to all pub trans.

But harder to get to from the airport, so it depends where the OP is coming from (and if he or she plans to use BART to the hotel).

And thanks for the compliment!

Thank you for all of your replies! I will be flying into the city and taking a cab to the hotel. For now, I plan on using public transportation during my 6 day visit. I may rent a car if I travel outside the city for a day.

Just the facts m'am...just the facts.

Taxi's are fairly sheap in SF IMHO if you aren't near a cable/street car line.
Some of the best amusement parks rides I ever experienced were in SF Taxis.

My wife and I bid $69 per night for the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf and it was accepted. The hotel has been updated recently and it is very well located for the trolley and cable cars. I have stayed in most areas of San Francisco and find the wharf, while touristy to be great for public transportation and less noisy than Union Square.

Will Union Square East, Embarcadero and the Wharf all give me easy access to the trolley and cable car system? Also, how much would you expect a taxi ride (from the airport to these areas) os going to cost me? Thanks again!

The heaviest/best public transportation "corridor" is down Market St from the Embarcadero to the Castro, with several bus runs heading straight west - 38 Geary (Ocean Beach/Cliff house), 1 Calif (Fillmore St/Pacific Heights shopping), 14 Mission to the Mission, plus the Muni Metro to GG Park, Noe Valley, Inner Sunset, Haight.

I would not rely on Cable Cars as your main source of transprtation for 6 days. The only trolly from the Wharf is the F line which goes back to the Market "Corridor" mentioned above. Out transportation system is mainly designed to get people to work - and people work downtown (Union Sq, Financial district) not at the Wharf.

Therefore, I think Union Sq east, SOMA, or the Embarcadero would be the best choices of locations for a 6 day stay (slightly influienced by my well known dislike of the Wharf area - I drove thought it on Sat & will do so again this Sat - yuck).

I agree with everything Stu says. I work in the Embarcadero area and think it would be a wonderful location for your stay. The reason to not stay in Fisherman's Wharf is that FW is not "workaday" San Francisco -- it's the one area of SF that is really just a tourist destination at this point (you might enjoy a visit, but unless you're there with children, it wouldn't be my first choice of an "adult" location, even not taking into consideration that public transportation is better elsewhere).

A taxi ride from SFO to downtown will run you about $40.00. (If you stay downtown, you can take BART for $8.75)

USE or Embarcadero/Financial would be my choices for PLzones. No guarantee of course -- but each time I've bid Embarcadero/Financial I've been booked into the Hyatt and it is a GREAT location directly across from the Ferry bldg. The BART station is across the street and it is such an easy trip I'd never consider a taxi if that is where I'm booked.

Some hotels in USE are also walking distance from BART.

Even better...the BART station is on the SAME side of the street, just walk out the door and you're there.

You're right -- not sure what I was thinking. (a brain fade -- started to say it was across the street from the Ferry bldg and then just went into auto pilot I guess )

Great information...thanks again. I think I will limit my bidding to Embarcadero and Union Square East. You are right about the Hyatt Regency accepting the 4 Star bids in Embarcadero. The Grand Hyatt seems to be the likely 4Star hotel in USE.

TomThumb, what did you end up bidding and getting?

janisj, what have your winning bids been in the Financial District/Embarcadero?
