The off-the-top-of-my-head response is simple: If it's more than you can afford, then it's too much for you to pay and you shouldn't consider staying there!
My second off-the-top-of-my-head response is: Why should you care what your SIL paid unless she owes you money!

Well I can afford it, and it's too much, I would never pay it. It's just not worth it to me, especially the Greenbriar!

Just because someone can afford something doesn't mean they should waste money on it if they don't see the value.

There's a reason the U.S. has so much debt......

Gee, maybe I read this wrong but I didn't get the impression Loisde had any kind of problem with her SIL. I thought that her point was simply that she was appalled at spending so much for a hotel, regardless of who spent it. It could have been her neighbor or a stranger on the street for that matter.

We've been staying at The Greenbrier at least once a year for the last 16 years (for conventions). I was stunned to see that meals were not included. Three meals per day in the Main Dining Room were always included. Meals in the other restaurants were extra. So I checked the Greenbrier website, and it states:
"Effective January of 2006 The Greenbrier will offer room only rates. Meals will be a la carte and a $19.00 per person, per night Resort Fee will be applicable. 18.5% gratutity will apply based upon consumption. Taxes are additional."

I'm not quite sure what that means - the $19.00. Any guesses?

We take my son so we get a Paradise Row cottage. (Not sure if we get a Convention rate.) Our bill is usually about $3500 - $4000 for 3 nights (that includes some shopping & a few activities). We can go to a nice place at the beach for a week for the same amount.

Love the Greenbrier but WOW!

Neopolitan,
The room rates are per person.

It's funny that you ask this. I stayed at the Greenbrier once for a corporate event and was there less than 24 hours. In fact, I checked in at 5pm and left at 7am, and my room cost $450!! Granted, I didn't pay for it, the company I was working for at the time did (and I'd add shortly before a big round of layoffs!), but STILL. The whole place just seemed to be reeking of old, stuffy money. My room was nice, but not that nice. Too many big, huge flowery things for me! I just thought the place was ridiculously over-priced. But, hey, if people have the money, and that's important to them, go for it! I'd rather take that money and spend 4, 5 or 6 days somewhere else.

And "golly, gee, and little green apples" made me laugh! Thanks.

For $1600 my husband and I could fly to Bermuda and stay in the newly renovated, lovely, Harmony Club for 3 nights and includes breakfast and afternoon tea. Let's see, the Greenbriar, which is inland, no food, 2 nights, or Bermuda for 3 nights and we only have to pay for dinner.

It isn't even close.

But if you don't want to fly, don't want to be cheek and jowl with people on the beach, and don't want to go to the Bahamas, it's a great deal <g> Some one wuold question going to the Bahamas for that amount of money.

Their website sure is nice and easy to navigate! Perhaps you are paying for that technology. I just tried a booking and room rates are for 2, not pp. If you increase occupancy to 3 or 4, the rate starts to go up. They most likely were pp when meals were included.

They were one of the hotels to lose a star in the big Mobil star shake-up a few years ago. They went from 5 to 4.

We've stayed in suites where the rack rate was something over $2,000, but my husband works for the hotel company so we stay at no cost. For that...you get a nice big suite, too many telephones to count, several bathrooms, plasma screen. I can't imagine paying that no matter, and doubt many do. Heck, at 2,000 a night, I probably couldn't sleep!

I loved "Yee gods and little fishes". My mother used to say that all the time and I haven't heard it from any other person. Mom? LOL

Who said anything about the Bahamas? I hate Nassau and Freeport, I would never pay $1600 to go to those Bahamas.

Harbor Island is another story though....

I have been to the Greenbriar and the Homestead (VA) all on the company's dime. Both are great resorts. The Greenbriar had a little more to do. I remember I picked up a stomach bug and the first night I was sitting on the bathroom floor thanking God that if I was going to be sick, than at least let me be sick at the Greenbriar! LOL! The room and bath were immaculate. I ordered tea and some jello to the room and I think it was about $40. for the room service. Yes, it is an over-the-top expensive resort. It is very nice though. I say if you can afford to do what you like and go where you want to go, than go for it! I would choose a more exotic location to drop 775.per night.

Coldwar27: The Greenbrier website says "The Bunker is temporarily closed for renovations. Bunker tours will resume in summer 2006." So call to make sure it is open.

Also be sure to check out the Presidents Home - it has historical items, etc.

Unless things have changed in the last few months: You can no longer get onto the grounds unless you are staying there. However, after staying, you can get back onto the grounds for up to 1 year. When staying at The Greenbrier you get a card to use to charge things to your room (on it is your name & the date of your stay). I don't know about in the main hotel, but in the cottages you have actual keys to get into your room. So to get back on the property within the year, you keep the card & present it to the guard at the entrance onto the property.

Malesharbes – You are correct. Yes, it must have been when meals were included. Gosh, now you get a bargain! HeeHee

Girlonthego – You picked a great place to get ill. There is a clinic at the Greenbrier that is excellent. People go to the Greenbrier Clinic to get yearly physicals. It is very expensive but well worth it. We know people who get yearly phyicals and the Clinic detected disease long before they had any symptoms so they were able to get early treatment. I have never had one (would like to) so can’t tell more about it.

Neopolitan,
The room rates are per person.
> > > > > > > > > > > > > >

No, Cvechko, they are per room, not per person. I even called to confirm. Until this year, most plans included meals and then their rates were per person, but the rates I listed above are for 2 people in one room.

I'm sorry if I came across as being snarky about my SIL. She is a good person and we have a great relationship.

I was just taken aback at the rate she and her husband were willing to pay, and many of you are correct in that our money is spent on what we value.

It's all relative. We spend about $750 per night to stay in Beaver Creek. We've spent $800 per night at The Cloister. Meanwhile, my SIL stays in places that cost $2,000 to $3,000 per night.

I still have to laugh at the "holier than thou" people who proudly say things like "how terrible that people spend so much. Such spending is simply wasteful and irresponsible. We'd never spend over $100 for a hotel". Do they have any idea how foolish that spending sounds to someone who is starving or on welfare or who could never possibly travel away from their home. That spending $100 on a bed for one night would seem just as wasteful or foolish to some. It's all relative you know.

Well said Neo.
FYI, I actually stayed (2 years ago) in a cute motel in the usually pricey Monterey for $40.- a night. That included taxes. I enjoyed it for than my $225.- a night room in Los Angeles, LOL.

We gladly paid over $500 a night to stay
in the Royal Tower section of Atlantis
on Paradise Island(Bahamas).I'd go back
in a hearbeat even if we had to eat
beans and weenies the rest of the year.
Yes, we paid top dollar for food but I didn't care. It was so gorgeous, so lux,and the staff treated us like British Royalty.I still dream about the white sand and turquoise water!

Cool. So now it may actually be cheaper to stay - I never ate all the meals we paid for. Am I figuring that correctly? That will make my hubby very happy.

Coldwar27: If memory serves correct, there was a fee to take a tour of the bunker. I'm thinking $20 per person. Do not know if this will still be the case.
