It all depends on your interests. If you like art the High Museum often has excellent special exhibits and also some interesting permanent collections especially in decorative arts and folk art. The Carlos Museum at Emory University has an outstanding Egyption collection. The Jimmy Carter Presidential Center is good if you have an interest in politics and world affairs. Fernbank Museum of Natural History is good also, as is Scietrek Museum which has lots of interactive exhibits. For shopping the Buckhead area has two very swanky malls Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza. For some trendy shops try the West Buckhead Village area. Bennett Street and Miami Circle are great for art and antiques. Top restaurants include Bachanalia, Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton Buckhead, Seegers, and Hedgerose. For more casual restaurants and nightspots the Virginia Highland area is a good choice-good places are Harvest, Dish and Terra Cotta-to name just a few. For something a little funkier in the way of restaurants, bars and shops try East Atlanta Village. Atlanta is very spread out so having a car helps- also it will most likely be hot in August so come prepared for that.

We had a great time at Stone Mountian. Climbed the mountian, saw the old plantation home they had just moved there (origional condition! They're going to restore it, I think), and went to their animal sancturary (beautiful). We also had fun climbing up Kennisaw Mountian. It's a hard climb, but the view was worth it! Maybe check out Olympic Village downtown. There's also CNN, Coca-Cola World, Margaret Mitchell's house... lots of stuff to see even if you just drive by. But the mountians definately gave us our best photos from the trip!

I was just in Atlanta a few weeks ago, and I had a wonderful time! We did:
CNN Studio Tour- it was a little touristy, but it was neat to see behind the scenes.
Olympic Park- amazing, wonderful, beautiful. The monuments are neat, adn the tribute to the bombing victims is touching. The park is right next to CNN HQ, so it's a logical stop.
Stone Mountain and Laser Show- the laser show was really neat! We got some good laughs from the "Devil Went Down To Georgia" part, and we were all teary-eyed at the "Proud to be an American" pert. The park itself is a full day of activities, too.
HAVE FUN!!

Another suggestion is to check out the Cyclorama in Grant Park if you have an interest in the Civil War/War Between the States/War of Northern Aggression.
Personally, we found Underground Atlanta and the CNN Tour to be quite boring. There's also a lot of contruction going on at the Omni.
