What is the distance between the airport in Newark and the train station in Newark?

My mother is coming from Ireland in Oct. She may now want to take the train within the US once she arrives from Ireland. I was wondering how far the train station is from the airport and is their a train to the train station or would she take a taxi or?
Thank you for any help. She may just cancel her trip until next year-she is 78 years old and a bit worried right now.
Thank you!
Patti

NJ Transit runs a shuttle bus between the two. Check out their website for schedule and prices. I have taken it several times.

I did this in July. The ride is about 15 minutes. The taxi ride is a fixed price--you tell the taxi stand manager at the airport that you're going to the Amtrak station and she/he fills out a slip and hands it to you (a large yellow piece of paper). It's about $12-$13. The taxi ride isn't the most scenic in the world and as a 78 yo woman coming from Ireland, she may find the whole atmosphere at the train station a bit intimidating. Just a warning. To get to the track at the train station, she will have to go up an escalator (there is also an elevator).
If someone could meet her at the airport and ride with her in the taxi to Newark and on her first Amtrak ride, it would be helpful. I was there with my 74 yo mother and I don't think she would have been comfortable there alone.
If she does have to go alone, I suggest that she ask at the info desk in the train station for a porter to help take her luggage up to the track and accompany her through the station. She will probably feel more comfortable with a porter's help.

David and BTilke-thank you both for taking the time to answer my question.
Thanks BTilke for the details. I think after reading this she would be better to just keep her flight from Newark to Cleveland and avoid the hassels! I will tell her this info. and this helps alot to make a decision.
Thanks again!

There is a monorail service at newark airport that currently serves the parking areas but has been expanded to go directly to NJ Transit rail and Amtrak rail access points. It is slated to begin the new service during Q4 of this year - it may be open by then. That said, IMO Penn Station in downtown Newark would be a bit intimidating for a woman her age traveling in a foreign country. I think the air leg to Cleveland is the best bet. If she does wish to go by rail it might make as much sense to just get a cab from the Newark airport directly to Penn Station in NYC and get the train from there. If I recall correctly, the Lakeshore Limited is the train that goes to Cleveland and it originates in NYC. if she got the train in Newark she'd still have to change trains in NYC.
