A friend and I drove cross country a couple of years ago. Another friend provided us with a soundtrack - blue grass for VA/TN, Tex-Mex for TX/NMex, etc. But what we found that we liked the most were the songs we knew by heart and could sing along to, not the stuff that was new to us. We liked old Motown, classic 70's stuff and the like. It made time go by a lot faster, especially in places where the radio choices were either static or the navajo station.

Wow, there's actually a Head East listener out there...

Lets not forget "Highway Star" by Deep Purple.

Ever since hearing that song al (I believe the title is Never been any Reason), live in 1979 I never tire of it. They were on the same bill with Rush, man I miss the 70's concerts.

Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" is a great way to start the trip

Just remembered another one that we played over and over during a long road trip: Steppin Out by Joe Jackson.

I prefer to listen to the local stations of whatever city I'm in. Get a feel for what they listen to.

For me, anything Motown makes the drive more enjoyable.

On our recent drive from MI to TX, my BH made two great mixes!! It was quite varied from 80's faves to 90's "new stuff" to 70's. I found I really enjoyed the Allman Bros Jessica, found myself unwittingly speeding up to that one!

"Running on Empty" - Jackson Browne
"Born in the USA" - Springsteen
"Dark Side of the Moon" (or anything else!)
any old Allman Bros
and old Steve Winwood
"Tapestry" (or any other" Carole King

**
I used to listen to local, but don't think there's such a thing anymore ... stations almost all owned by a small handful of companies with the same playlists for the type of station you're listening to. Bring back locally owned & operated stations! FCC needs to get stricter, not more lax, about station ownership. I'm considering satellite radio ... maybe the same music, but cut out the blab.

It seems like Clear Channel Communications owns everything now.

On the first day of vacation, as soon my wife and I hit the highway, we have got to do a chorus of "On the Road Again."

If we're driving in the mountains in early morning, it's Gregorian Chant: matins from "Brother Sun, Sister Moon."

And nothing beats Grover Washington for gliding down some peaceful backroad in the early evening.

"Rockin' Down the Highway"-Doobie Bros.
"Radar Love"-Golden Earring
"LA Woman"-The Doors
"Mobile"-The Who
"Hollywood Nights"-Bob Seger
"Caldonia"-BB King
"Black Dog"-Zep

...and anything by Ruben or Clay!

If I put on Norah Jones I'd either be in the back seat w/ Mrs Kal or asleep...maybe BOTH, by time I hit the county line!

Driving the stretch of highway at the Cap Rock area between Sweetwater and Lubbock at sunset...."When I die I may not go"

"Jose Cuervo"...any place in the SW.

We played the soundtrack to Thelma and Louise years ago on a family drive through Big Sur...still good driving music.

I like John Denver's music anywhere and anytime but expecially when we are traveling in Colorado I like to listen to "Rocky Mountain High" & "Sunshine on my Shoulders".
