What & Where to Eat in Hana?
GonetoMaui, etal..........I will be in Hana for 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 3 dinners....what to eat where and when? We are staying in a cottage and we will have a grill. Where is the best place to stop for water, soft drinks, beer, and milk if I must!! The nights we will be there are Tues, Weds, and Thurs.
Please don't let me miss any must eats either to, in or from Hana!!

Thanks bob, but we have so many great fodorites who have been to Maui umpteen times and so many who live there, I would rather get their opinions! For instance, I think I was told that The Ranch House or Hana Hotel or somewhere has prime rib on Wednesdays. And I have read to buy beef at some store either in Hana or on the way to....

Well darling I wish I could help you out. Everytime we've gone we've provisioned up by the airport and heading on the road. Our first trip, over 10 years ago, we didn't believe them, and ended up cooking Paul Newmans over angel hair, and it was delicious. I adored having drinks at Hotel Hana and dinner one trip. They also had the best wasabi dusted french fries for knoshing with a drink. I had leftovers of mrlous's amazing grilled fish eggs benedict from the Hotel, which he enjoyed while I flew with Armin.
Bottom line is, I have always gone with a kitchen and bfast, snacks and a meal or 2. There is a place down by the harbour, maybe some fish available if you are in the know, and the grocer provisions much better on our last trip. I'd call the concierge at Hotel Hana and ask for dining options.
Auntie is there right now and may have some suggestions. Oh and past Hana there was a family that made roadside bbq. Never tried it but smelled ono!
So although there are very few options, with a very little provisioning and then making our way, we have never wanted for anything, but more time in Heavenly Hana!
Good luck finding which night the one or two local places has something downhome going on. And take in a softball game if they're playing!
Cant believe 3 K9s in Hana over just a couple of months......sssssshhhhhhhh! Don't forget, the cows never stop mooing, there is nothing at the end of the road, it is a waste of time best spent back in Kaanappali!!!!!

I'2,
You can always do what I did and drive over to Hailimaille General Store at night in a blinding rain storm! The food called me. What can I say?
There is apparently a new Thai food wagon/truck/stand? somewhere around the baseball diamond in town. It is just behind the hotel.
I think I mentioned once before that on the way over around Nahiku there used to be a roadside food place. Not sure if it is still there.
When I stayed over there for a week I did my shopping at Kahului and Paia and bought enough for the week. Besides my adeventure to HGS I ate mostly at home. At the time there was a place just before town called the Hana Gardenland cafe that served decent breakfasts and lunch. I think it is closed down now though.
Apparently the General Store and Hasegawas in town sometimes have plate lunch type things, but that sounds hit and miss.
I'm gonna keep my eyes open for when I'm there next month. I sure hope that family is still selling food to raise money for their vacation. I think the who posted that said it was around the turn off for Hamoa Beach.
It's all about the food. No?

I'm thinking if we stop Hailimaille General Store on the way up, we should just need to snack for dinner the first night. I hope that family is still on the side of the road. That would be great!

Hi iceeu2
We were in Hana on a Tuesday and Wednesday nights so here are our experiences, it was a couple of years ago though.
On Wednesday the Hana Ranch restaurant was open so we went there. It was a great night, a really friendly place I would recommend for atmosphere alone -the food was nice (though not spectacular). We got there just after it opened at 6 and it was busy (we didn't book). It filled up quickly and it seemed like a lot of tables were booked so you may want to make a reservation if you want to eat later.
The hotel restaurant was a little expensive and too posh for us!! So we did not try it, but it seems a lovely, tranquil place.
On the Tuesday night we cooked in, having bought some provisions before we arrived in Hana, and then got some wine from the Hasegawa general store.
Breakfast was provided for us at our villa (Hana Hale Malamalama) so I can't comment on options for that.
Lunches - we had a good plate lunch at Tutu's on hana Bay. Also a great sandwich and smoothie from a little hut next to Kipahulu general store.
Hope this helps!

One of my favorite Hawaiian memories (now this was five years ago but worth checking out) was dining at Hotel Hana, the food was pretty good, BUT they had a wonderful children's hula show. It was low key and seemed so authentic, especially because the leader was an ancient Hawaiian lady who sang and played guitar, just felt so other-worldly and peaceful. I remember using the ladies room, and all the little girls were in there, laughing and chatting and changing costumes, a very happy scene I stumbled upon.
