Gail and other helpful Fodorites,
I want to thank you for all your advice and suggestions. Over New Years we talked at length about this wonderful idea for a vacation. However, with airline costs coming close to $2000 after fees and taxes, we have decided to wait and budget more for this trip and try it another time. I long to visit all of the Northwest and cant wait to plan that trip, perhaps next year.
For this year, though, we found a couple of flights left going to SanDiego for $99 each way. Much more affordable to our family budget. So that will be tons of fun too in a different way. We went ahead and booked those flights using the internet rates before they were gone. The flight stops in Las Vegas, so the alloted flights were going fast since Memorial weekend. I appreciate everything and will continue to read the South Dakota posts for more useful information.

Gail, glad to hear that. After looking at it, we have found more than enough to do. Should we do the zoo or the animal park?? With just six whole days, not enough time to do both. Also, which is the best beach for kids for an afternoon. Thanks.

You might now want to repost with San Diego questions - I am going to get flamed for "hijacking" your post - even though you can't be blamed for hijacking your own post!
We did zoo - nice walk around the grounds. (Our kids were teenagers). Did a harbor cruise, west to a Padres game. As far as beach, we drove to Coronado, had lunch and then just drove to the beach there, parked along the road, and went to the beach. (In our area, Boston beaches charge up to $25/day for parking so that was a thrill!)
I advise against a day trip to Tijuana - many posts here about that.
