Western US Winter travel
A friend and I (65ish ladies) are considering a winter trip (January) to Yellowstone and would like to extend the trip beyond the 5 days of the planned excursion. Suggestions for non-skiers? What are road conditions typically like and can Southerners not used to snow get around?

Keep in mind that Yellowstone is closed to auto traffic once the snow comes in Oct/Nov. You cannot drive through Yellowstone in January to reach GTNP - it would be a long detour in winter driving conditions to reach Jackson from Montana.

In many parts of the west (Rocky Mountains), when the weather dictates, Tire Chains are REQUIRED for many of the roads and Mountain Passes.. You will need tire chains with you and you must be able to put them on and take them off your car. Do you think you are up to that task?
