Western UP vacation

Hi, We are planning our 2007 Camping trip. We are planning to camp in the Western Upper Pennisula for two weeks (have already toured Mackinaw, Pictured Rocks etc. several times). My question is: has anyone done this type of trip and what itinerary did the follow? We would definitely like to hit Lake of the Clouds and Copper Harbor. Thanks!

Family has camped in the UP many times, in fact DS is at Michigan Tech. Some of our favorite places are the Porcupine Mts [includes Lake of the Clouds], Black River waterfalls, Brockway Mt Drive [near Copper Harbor] and Quincy Mine. If you are adventurous, you could add Isle Royale to the list of possiblities.

What type of camping are you into - RV, pop-up, tenting, backpacking?
We are tent campers with some backpacking thrown in by DH, DD & DS.

Check out www.UPtravel.com for a great planner.

Hi SuzieTrue, Thanks for the information. We have a small camper and enjoy the state parks. We like to Kayak, hike and swim but nothing too strenuous. I checked out the website and requested some information. Thanks so much!

Hi Again,

Sorry to bother but I was just looking at some of the campgrounds up in the Western UP and wondered if you could comment on any. We are specifically looking at Porcupine State Park, McCLain and possible Van Riper. There is a private campground called FannieHoe in Copper Harbor. Do you have any experience with that one? We're not too keen private campgrounds, some are great and some....well.... they can be awful. Also have you been to the Laurium Inn (in Laurium)? I have a friend who is considering coming with us however they like to enjoy the camping experience during the day, and then be pampered in the evening (this was a compromise as part of the marriage). Anyway, they are looking at staying in Laurium. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Michigancamper,

The Porcupine Mts are a favorite place in the western UP. We prefer the campground on the western side of the park. It is a little more rustic but is along side of some waterfalls.

I've been by Fannie Hooe but don't know anything about the camping.

McLain SP is at the end of the canal that divides the Keewanaw peninsula. It has wonderful views towards Isle Royale.

Van Riper SP is where we usually take a break when headed to Houghton. It is on Lake Michigamee which is a nice lake. It is also in the middle of "moose country".

I have been by the Laurium Inn but never inside. It is supposed to be very nice. Near the inn are some interesting mining museums that we have visited.
