west nile virus
I read in cnn that they've found birds
w/ the west nile virus in NY.
Now, what's the best way to stay
safe during a planned visit to western
NY? Has the Niagara region been affected
in the past? Or has this been mostly the
nyc?
I'd appreciate any tips for tourists
regarding this matter.
Thanks!

Pati, I have not heard about the "west nile" upstate, in the city there have not been any reports of the virus in people this year, but birds have been found that have tested positive ( which of course is not good news)
The word we are getting here is that the affected areas are going to be sprayed again with a new pesticide.
If you are going to be in a wooded area, it is always a good idea to wear something like off on exposed skin and to check for ticks at the end of the day. (I got one recently on Fire Island, so I have learned my lesson, luckily no Lyme Disease, but had a good scare)
We are going to the park tomorrow night for Opera in the Park and I already have citronella candles ready.
Hope this helps some, if I hear anything else will post.

Info on this sort of thing would be available thru the state's department of health. For NY state, go to http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/westnile/index.htm for info on W Nile Virus prevalence and protection. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control would have information on this.
