If you're not planning on visiting anywhere north of Anaheim, then by all means fly into Anaheim. However, if you think that you want to visit places like the Getty Center, then LAX would probably be a better choice. It's hard to say without knowing a more detailed itinerary.

California is full of different "wine country" destinations. Are you planning on going to a "wine country" from San Francisco or from Los Angeles?

The John Wayne airport, in Santa Ana, is the closest airport to Disneyland. It's about a 12 mile drive. The next closest is the Long Beach airport, only about 2 miles further. I like the Long Beach airport, because of its art deco design, which has been partially preserved, its relatively low traffic, and that it's a Jet Blue hub. But I would pick a flight based on the fare and the schedule and not the specific location of the airport within the LA metropolitan area.

Hello stichcreek. Friends from Italy have flown and enjoyed NYC and than have taken JetBlue from JFK to Las Vegas and visited there. They didn't rent a car to see the Grand Canyon but you. They than flew via JetBlue to Long Beach. You could than rent a car to drive to SF after visiting DisneyLand etc. They always love the JetBlue airline as their seats are larger and are leather. My Italian friends have flown from Long Beach to the Oakland Airport (right across the SF Bay from SF) and have taken BART into SF. So just another airline to consider.

Easytraveler makes a good point about "wine country." While we assume you mean Napa/Sonoma, there's other fabulous areas between SF and LA. If you go to Hearst Castle, the San Luis/Paso Robles area is a really fun to explore and wine taste. Then there's the area the movie Sideways made famous around Santa Barbara.

Unless there's a specific reason/preference for going to Napa, you have lots of other choices that are already on your route.

I also endorse using JetBlue as a complement to or instead of Southwest Airlines. If you are going to Disneyland & LA, LGB is conveniently midway, especially if you rent a car and might otherwised get hit with one-way drop off fees by using two airports. They fly to JFK (New York), Las Vegas and both San Francisco and Oakland in the Bay Area.

Definitely spend a night or two in Anaheim during your Disney stay.

BTW October is a great time to travel. You have lots of time to make an itinerary and don't need to rush into bookings yet.
