I would suggest Virginia but it does get warm in July.

I love Savannah, GA! It will be warm and muggy in July but you can drive out to the ocean at Tybee Island and be there in a few minutes! Read Savannah by John Jakes before you go to get a taste of the history. Beautiful city with all its squares, great food, trolley cars and even ghost tours! And the people are full of southern charm and hospitality! Check the city site on the Internet for festivals.

If you are coming near Florida, I would highly suggest St. Augustine. I live in Florida and try to visit St. Augustine yearly (if possible) just for the relaxed attitude, the beaches, and the history.

Louisville, Bardstown, Frankfort & Lexington area in Kentucky.

Louisville - Kentucky Derby Museum, Belle of Louisville Steamboat, Joe Ley Antiques

Bardstown - My Old Kentucky State Park, Stephen Foster Story, Whiskey Museum. Close to Lincoln's Birthplace and Mammoth Cave

Frankfort - Historic Cemetery w/Daniel Boone's grave, domed capitol building, covered bridge about 10 miles away.

Lexington - Horse farms, Kentucky Horse Park

I just returned from a trip through St. Augustine, Savannah and Charleston. Any of those three cities would by fabulous if you are interested in Southern history.
