Weekend Plans

Hi! We live in the DC metro area with kids aged 4 and 1.

We'd like some spend a night in some hilly area or an area with nice log cabins furnished withing 250 mi from DC.

An waterfront area with scenic spots would be awesome.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a ton!

I would pick Blackwater Falls, though many of the others are equally nice.

This is a great suggestion, great area.

Another suggestion in the area ... Blackbear Resort. The DNR had actually captured one there during our short stay a few years back. The kids got to see it before it was transported deeper into the woods.

Keep calling back. They do have cancellations.

Also, search the entire WVA parks website. There are several parks that provide the amenities you seek.

Our favorite place in the Canaan Valley area (heck, one of our favorite places anywhere) is The Purple Fiddle in Davis, which is very close to Blackwater Falls SP.

Also try the cafe at the Whitegrass XC ski area.

Sorry about the double post. I wanted to add that the Whitegrass cafe may not be open yet this year.

I want to STRONGLY agree with the rec for the Purple Fiddle. Go at least an hour or more before the music starts and enjoy a great dinner to ensure a good seat. There are also board games (Scrabble, etc.) and such if you need to pass some extra time. Great beer, great food, GREAT music. "Don't miss!"

Are you looking for a website that will give you ideas for things to do on your weekend trip? Try this one:

http://www.canaanvalley.org/activities.cfm

The hike to scenic Blackwater Falls is very short - perfect for taking two small children. The lodge has a swimming pool your kids would like. I agree with Bardo about going early to The Purple Fiddle. They usually collect a cover charge when the band starts. It will probably be a little too late for your kids.

Blackwater Falls SP is very pretty. You might find you're happy just hanging around the lodge and relaxing.
