Weekend in NYC, the weather wasn't great but the food was!
It had been 7 years since my husband and I were in NYC. We took a long weekend and decided to hit some places we haven't been before. We wanted to stay in a different part of town...we usually stay in Midtown. So about the hotel....
I have lots of Hitlon points, so we put those to use and stayed at the Hilton on West 26th, between 6th and 7th, in the Chelsea area. The location was very convenient to the High Line and Chelsea markets. It was always a straight shot up 6th to Midtown when we were up there for reservations at Le Bernardin and Milos. This hotel was pretty new. The bar downstairs was nice, the rooms are up to date, quiet and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful and we would stay there again. They do have a rooftop bar that is OK. The view is very good but some of the fixtures were simple wood and it looked more beach shack than city chic.
Chelsea Market was close by and we really liked visiting it. I can tell you the Fat Witch brownies were fantastic! We also enjoyed Amy's Bakery, as well. They have a wide variety of items and we stopped in for breakfast after a run on our second day. I had delicious pain au chocolat and Chaz had a great little ham/Swiss panini. We both had fresh juice (apple cider and grapefruit). There were so many good looking foodie quality goodies at Chelsea Market and you can always stop in for a snack or any meal. We picked up some strawberry balsamic jam and cheese biscuits for our Saturday afternoon cocktails at Lucy's Whey. I wish we could have gotten some of their cheese. I also wish we could have tried out the gelato there,as well. You could probably eat there at every meal for a week and do quite well! I would kill to have the seafood market at CM by my house.
We spent our first day at Chelsea Market and shopping in the Meatpacking district. We had pizza at John's Pizza on Bleeker St. Very good, maybe not as good as I remembered but we ate it all! The worst thing about the trip was the dreary weather we had. Chilly, drizzly and gray. We finally got our room at 2:30 on our way back from our pizza lunch.
It was great to warm up and rest up before our reservation at Milos in Midtown. We decided to clean up, dress up and have a drink at the rooftop bar before heading to midtown.
I had the worst wine I have had in a long time at the rooftop bar. What I got in the downstairs bar was very good...not sure why it is so different!?! The hotel really promotes the roof top bar but it needs to be upgraded. Unfortunately, we couldn't see all the Empire State building because of the grey weather, so the view on our first night did not wow, but it does in good weather.
It's a good thing that our dinner reservation at Milos was early (6:30) because I had made it for the wrong day! We did get a table in the bar anyway!- we wouldn't have 45 minutes later! The restaurant is lively and pretty. Our food was terrific! We started with the grilled octopus and it did not disappoint. We shared a grilled Mediterranean sea bass for dinner and it was delicious. Simply grilled with lemon and olive oil. We were very happy with our food and our table ended up being good to survey the whole scene at Milos. We finished up with the best baklava we have ever had. Not too sweet, still crispy and not soggy and you could still taste the butter. It is everything baklava should be and the perfect finish to a great meal. We would definitely go back to Milos. It's not new but it is terrific and we aren't alone-the place was packed!
We ended up the night at the King Cole Bar at the St Regis since it was right down the street. I think my champagne was a bit flat but we enjoyed the bar and the crowd. The hotel is lovely! We were lucky to snag seats at the bar and it was a busy, Friday night scene there. The Alain Ducasse restaurant in the center of the hotel is gorgeous. I know it is a cliche but you have to go there for a drink once!, don't you?
And speaking of cliches, our cab drove through Times Square on the way back downtown. It really is a spectacle! You just have to see it at night to be amazed at how lit up it is! Is spectacky-lar a word? It should be...it's loud, it's bright, it's overdone and loaded with awful chain restaurants. And somehow, it's still something to see. We had to laugh and enjoy it! It has been years since I have been anywhere near Times Square.
Back to our room at the Hilton and ready for tomorrow and our big lunch at Le Bernardin!

Denisea, really enjoyed your NYC report. We really like the city and have been talking about a return visit.
We're still trying to "catch-up" since returning from our Feb-March trip to AUS and NZ. But we're getting the bug to plan another trip. Your report nudges us to make it NYC! We may try the Chelsea district.

Apparently, I am confused!
It's so weird...I do have two reports going...I posted one and then COULD NOT find it. It simply disappeared....and as I was going to post on the other one, I finally see the T/R!
I will finish on the other one...sorry!
