Weekend in Las Vegas

My roommate and I are planning a long weekend to Las Vegas. Here are our questions:When is the best time to go to LV? We were thinking about April or July. Would it be better to rent a car for other sights, like the Hoover Dam, or take a taxi/shuttle, whatever is available? What should we NOT miss on this weekend vacation? Thanks. Any suggestions and/or advice is greatly appreciated.
PS We'll be coming from the east coast.

IMO there is no real best time to visit (there are bad times to visit). If you can visit during the week, that would be best because rates are cheap and crowds are much less. If you're going to the Hoover Dam, I think you should rent a car. But if you're only there for 2 or 3 days you may not have time for many day trips.

Vegas is great. We went last May and it was perfect.... Stayed at NYNY. A crowded place...gives the true feeling of NY city....down to the smoking man-holes. Rooms are nice & modern. Only negative is the recycled smokey air killed us....but you get that in all casinos.

I recommend staying near the center of the strip. This way you can easily walk to most destinations. Cabs are annoying since the traffic is so heavy, most times you could walk faster. We spent 2 afternoons just walking up and down the strip and through all the casinos/hotels....there's tons to see, each hotel has their own theme.

Dinner & most show reservations are a must expecailly anywhere trendy or extra nice. Make them asap online.

Buffets typically stink....cheap eats but usually garbage food. NYNY has an open late diner that has steak & crab legs dinner for like $8. Highly recommend.

Don't miss:
25¢ slots— it was our happy hour. Play $30 in quarters and get drinks on the house Cheaper than $8 a beer at the bar.

Bellagio fountain show....free & runs every half hr/15 min or so.

The Rio

Rollercoaster on top NYNY

Good luck.

Go in April, unless you like baking in 100+ degree weather. It was in the 90s in April last time I went, though other posters on this board said they experienced some 70-degree weather in April.

Renting a car out there is so cheap that it's worth it.

The best thing to do in Vegas is to go from one hotel/casino to the next - all have themes, and there's lots of free stuff to see. It's like Disney for adults.
