Weather in Dallas

We will be visiting Dallas in either March or April. Could anyone tell us what weather conditions to expect and what time does it get dark in those months. Looking forward to visiting Texas. Many thanks for any help.

Hello Andy. I live in Dallas. As you may or may not know, the weather in Dallas is very volatile and changing constantly (for example, one day it could be 30 degrees as the high and the next day near 60). So, for March, it could be pretty cold -- 40s, 50s or very nice, 60s, 70s. I hate to be so vague but that's the truth! As for April, it rains a lot in spring here, and is warmer, but still volatile -- could be 50s-70s. Hope that helps a little!

Hi, Andy. Brooke is not kidding--I've seen it be 70's in March and snow in early April. Usually it is in the 70's. It will start to get dark around 6:30-7:30 &, of course, the time change comes early April so can be later. If you have a choice, try late March/early April and take a trip toward the Hill Country between Austin & San Antonio. The wildflowers are absolutely beautiful on I-35 between Dallas & San Antonio--whole fields of blueboonets, Indian paintbrushes, etc. People stop to take pictures, brides are getting their pictures made--it really is fun. Check guidelive.com for good information regarding restaurants and events occuring while you are here.

Great idea Linda! You should definitely travel in Texas during Spring, very pretty! The bluebonnets and "Indian paint" -- mixture of wildflowers -- on the side of the roads are so pretty!

I grew up near Dallas, lived in Waco for 9 years, and now live in Austin, which is about 200 miles south of Dallas. Spring is beautiful in all of Texas, and wildflowers line the highways. Of course, the best place to see wildflowers is the Hill Country, west of Austin and northwest of San Antonio. But, thats a good 4 hour drive from Dallas.

We get most of our rain in the spring, as well as tornados - but don't worry, they almost never hit the cities. (Warning: stay away from Jarrell, a tiny town north of Austin off I-35. It gets hit pretty bad every 3 years or so. Kinda creepy if you ask me.) But, the thunderstorms can be great, and we always need rain.

The lows are ususally in the 40's or 50's, and the highs in the 70's or 80's. A few years ago though, it was 96 at the end of February. (Of course, a year or so before that it got down to 16 and ahem, iced over in the middle of February. Of course, it was in the 70's the next week.) Our weather this year though, has been unusually cold.

I'm unusually stupid about these things, only recently understaning the whole shorter winter day/longer nights concept, so I can't address that concern properly. But, lucky for you, I watched the sunset a few days ago - AND noticed the time - at around 6:30 or so, so in the spring it gets dark around 7:30.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Texas!! Good luck.

Thanks people,

it's a real help when you can get good advice from people in the area you're travelling to! We are really looking forward to visiting your great state. Whatever the weather, which I'm sure will be better than in London, we'll have a great time. We will also be visiting a few other cities such as Houston, Waco and Austin so we'll make sure we try to see everything you guys recommend.

Cheers, and we'll see you in March.

Andy

Hi Andy-

Be sure to go over to Fort Worth while you're in Dallas. A trip to the legendary Stockyards is well worth the 1 hour drive!

And don't forget the Arboretum for the spring flower show, Dallas Blooms! I get back "home" a couple of times a year and always plan one of those trips to coincide with that event, one of our favorites.

Andy, just remember that Texas is a big state. It is 30 minutes to Fort Worth, 1 1/2 hours to Waco, 3 hours to Austin, 4 hours to Houston. I don't know how much time you have to spend. My European visitors love San Antonio, which is about 1 hour drive from Austin.
In Waco, the Armstrong Browning Library on the Baylor campus has the largest collection of Robert & Elizabeth Barrett Browning works in the world; the Texas Ranger Museum is also near Baylor; the Dr. Pepper Museum is a fun place.
In Houston, drive the 30 minutes to NASA and see the Space Center.

Andy,
I, too, lived in DFW, but I moved from a colder climate. I found Spring to usually be warm, and I wore shorts in Feb. My A.C. was on full-time usually in March, and one yr. I had it on some days in Feb. Keep in mind you're used to cooler temps, so it may seem warmer to you than to the locals. In the 6 yrs. I was there, I never had a cold Feb. Enjoy - it's a beautiful time of year, and definately pack some shorts.

A weather read-out from Dallas as of March 24th. Today is a rainy day. Temps are comfortable, running around 60's. And as we move into April you will still get some of those rains, but temps are quite pleasant. I think the best time of year in Dallas is March thru early May. Blossoms are out & springtime is a joy to behold!

Best resources are to check your weather websites.
www.wunderground.com is good & also provides historical data.
www.wfaa.com is one of the local news stations (Channel 8 -- ABC) and 'Troy' is as good as any of the forecasters.
