Weather and temp. advice for Chicago in Nov./Dec.
Please could someone tell me what kind of weather conditions I might experience in Chicago in mid November to the first week of December.
I plan to travel there for a short break, and since I like the cold weather I am not too concerned about freezing temperatures. What I would like to know is whether this period is likely to be snowy and wet rather than crisp and sunny, and just how low will the mercury dip?
Thankyou in advance for your help.

The Midwest weather is one thing -- highly unpredictable from day-to-day. During Nov/Dec, Chicago can be as you describe . . snowy, wet, crisp, sunny, and the temps may vary from below zero (unlikely) to 60 (also unlikely), but more likely would probably average in the high 30's to low 40's. In a "normal" year, more snow falls from December through March and November is considered late Fall with more crisp days. Chicago is known as the Windy City for a reason -- bring along a coat that keeps the wind out.

The weather in Chicago is often unpredictable, but November is often surprisingly cold. If I had to use one word to describe what is typical for most November days it would be "raw." That is not to say that it is not POSSIBLE that some days will be sunny and crisp. Snow is not usually a factor until the end of December, but freezing rain and sleet are not unknown. You would definitely want a winter-weight coat for this time of year.

On the other hand (continuing the previous post), I can recall that it was never real unusual to have snow on Thanksgiving. As for temps, raw is true, but the mercury doesn't usually do it's real low dips (the zero and below area) till right around Christmas. Hope you have a great visit!
