Well now...I am not sure what to say.
Kal, I know...it is shocking isn't it? I thought sure we'd find our hula hut in that dreadful tropical ghetto of Hanalei on the hell-hole of Kawai, but nooooooo, just when you've got it all figgered out, WHAMMO!
And icee, I have not been smoking that potent pakalolo they try to sell you in Lahaina town. Really,I haven't.
Kealalani is right. There are no grass shacks in Maui. Just huge concrete, over the top, Evian spritz hotels with guests lined up around the pool or beach cheek to cheek demanding service while they fiddle with their ipads, maxipads or whatever pads. It is over commercialized, overpriced and is nothing more than a over-the-top imitation of Southern California beach culture.
Now that I got that out of my system...We did find our little piece of paradise on the water in South Maui with direct access to turtle heaven and walking distance to the perfect "bobbing and schmoozing" beach. The property has been in the same local family for generations and it has that real "kama'aina" feel to of a place that has seen its share of family ups and downs. Nuthin fancy, but the location is perfect for us.
No matter how nice a place I find for us or how great a trip I plan for us, Martin never wants to go back as he figures there are just too many other great trips to be taken. Up to this point Kauai was the only exception, but it has been four years since we've been there. One day he turned to me and said, "You're not going to believe this, but I could come back here again and again and again every year. I LOVE it here." After I closed my gaping jaw I told him that I would be happy to arrange that and our next visit there is already in the works for sometime next year!

Just remember, there are no "Hidden Gems" Doughty and his blue books have 'Revealed' them all! LOL!!!!!!! and pigs fly - well at least the wild hawaiin rooster pigs

There's plenty to do on Maui and over the years I've done most of it, so my recent trips focus on sort of doing nothing other hanging out at the beach, snorkeling and just being a vegematic. Two of the last four trips have included several nights in Hana, so that gives you an idea of what we're after.
Whale watching, snorkeling, jogging, walking, swimming, reading and napping occupied our days at the house.
More later...aloha withdrawl is brutal.

You know, aloha spelled mixed up is hola ... sorta 
I am picturing the green, the breezes and the sound of the surf. I still have an imagination, apparently because none of those are nearby .. I can't wait to immerse myself in your stories ... forget about work or what needs to be done at home. ..

I'm at work so it's hard to write with 20 7/8 year old children clamoring for me and that would just perpetuate the notion that we teachers do nothing all day. BTW, this is being written on my 30 minute lunch break. You frozen east coasters are gonna have to wait until 8pm or 9pm for more...sorry.
