Carol,
Stationmasters is a great suggested resource. Here's a map of the entire Metro system. You might click on every stop on the Yellow and all the stops on te Red Line between Bethesda and Silver Spring. The hotels show up as "red squares".

If nothing pans out, Tyson's isn't the end of the world - just taxi to&from Dunn Loring. There are always taxis waiting at the suburban Metro stops.

Carol, The area near the Huntington metro is closer to DC than Tysons but I'm blanking on the hotels you might want to stay in. Do you have one in mind? Can't think of many hotels of the caliber you mentioned that are out in that direction.
For those who haven't read all the posts, the convention has tied up or rendered prohibitively expensive the typical places people are mentioning in Crystal City, Rosslyn, Ballston, etc.

We returned home from Washington IAD to ORD late last night and drove the three hours to get HOME again. It was a really nice trip. The BEA (Book Expo America) was wonderful in every way! Next year it's in NYC. I can't wait!
We arrived at IAD early morning on Thursday, collected bags and rental car, and waited to pick up a business friend who was going to be "doing" the BEA with us (from Thailand). She was visiting the USA first time and really enjoyed her visit. She is right now on her very long trip back to BKK.
We did not actually start the BEA until Friday morning, so we had time to explore DC and the area. We were staying at Tysons Corner at a new Hilton Garden Hotel. We checked in and drove into DC for a short look around. The drive really was not bad at all. I had anticipated a lot of traffic, but this did not happen. We parked at Union Station and bought a few souvenirs, then drove around the sites a bit and located the convention center for the next day's visit. Dinner was at Union Station food court. Nothing special, but we were all tired and ready to call it a day early so it was enough.
Friday morning we opted to try the Metro into DC from Tysons Corner. Our hotel assured us that their shuttle would deliver us there, and pick us up on our return later on as well. After a hearty breakfast (not included in room) we sat and waited and waited and waited (about 45 minutes I think) for the shuttle that NEVER CAME to take us to the Metro. We opted to DRIVE to DC since we already knew the way.
Good choice!! We found parking near the convention center at $20/day, and the traffic going into the city was not bad at all. We ended up driving in everyday rather than trust the shuttle. I have to say, I spoke to several folks who said they had waited an hour at the Metro station for the shuttle to take them back to the hotel. ARRRGGHHHHH that's terrible!!!
Problem is... the hotel is very new and they are just getting their act together and trying to iron out bugs in the system. All in all, it was a nice hotel, very comfortable, clean, and new, and in a quiet location but very handy to Tysons Corner shopping and restaurants. I would stay there again, and I would not hesitate to drive into the city rather than waiting to ride to the Metro station. We used interstate 66 rather than 495.
Favorite meal was at Legal Seafoods at Tysons Galleria. Another nice meal was at Slade's at Tysons II mall. Their French dip was very tasty. There are many great dining options, I'm sure, but we were tired every evening after walking the HUGE convention all day, so something easy was the best option!
Dulles Airport is not one of my favorites, but we managed to fly into and out of there without any delays or lost luggage.
I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions on this forum. They were much appreciated, and had there not been such a delay, we probably would have taken the Metro each day to the convention. But maybe things turned out for the better...
