Washington DC after Xmas
Is this a good time to go visit the sites? Been there couple of times but would like to do SMithsonian again and maybe Ford Theatre, Native American museum, etc. Was thinking about taking Amtrak so would need hotel close to station and within walking distance of sites. Thanks.

Since the Metro also serves Union Station, you don't need a hotel close, you can choose via other criteria.
Yes, it's a good week to visit, the usual politicians and students aren't around. Check on Ford's schedule, they're due to close for renovations.

If you don't mind chilly weather, it's a great week to be there. Holiday decorations will still be up--the Christmas trees of the fifty states, the National Christmas tree, and lots of other stuff all over. Agree that you shouldn't worry about a hotel close to Union Station, pick one based on your budget and proximity either to most of the Smitnsonian museums (Loew's L'Enfant Plaza springs to mind), or to restaurants and cafes for brekfast and evening meals (Dupont Circle area, many hotels to choose from). Happy trails!

I recently stayed at the Phoenix Park hotel, it is only five minutes walk from Union Station. I got a great w/end deal off ratestogo.com. The hotel was very nice, small rooms but very comfortable and a good Irish pub next door. At that time of year you will need some good comfort food to ward off the cold weather.
