Try the Woodley Guest House. It is a B&B by the zoo. You can see the Metro station from the front porch. I have stayed here twice while traveling alone and have felt very safe in the neighborhood at night. There are many restaurants within walking distance. A nice cold breakfast is included in the price of the room.
