Very much possible using Metro -- subway to the end of the Yellow line at Huntington (approx 25 minutes from downtown), then a bus to the gate of Mt. Vernon (another 20+ minutes). There could be long waits between buses at mid-day, so an early trip (pre 10 a.m.) may make sense.

At the bottom of this page from Mt. Vernon's website, it explains which buses go there.

At the top right of the WMATA page that was linked above there is a trip planner which you could use also.

Didn't even think about this before.
Any restaurants open on Christmas day?
Probably will have to make do with the hotel restaurant (or a restaurant at a different hotel than the one I'm staying in) or fast food I guess.

There will be plenty of restaurants open on Christmas Day. Check out www.opentable.com
Also, there will be tons of ethnic restaurants open. I'd walk over to 7th Street--near the Verizon Center--and you will probably find all sorts of stuff open on Christmas.

Good advice.
Saw an Indian restaurant open and a bunch of Chinese restaurants open around lunch.
Not very good food but the place I went to was packed.
There are a few places open Christmas night in Gallery Place and one just outside, La Tasca, which didn't get such good reviews from the Washington Post.
But should be able to find something to eat after an exhausting day of walking all over the mall, from Lincoln Memorial all the way to the Supreme Court.
